Staff reports | Carolina Day, a special day for remembering a key day of South Carolina’s historical role in the Revolutionary War, will be celebrated June 28. Back in 1776, a British fleet pounded Sullivan’s Island and landed troops to take what is now Fort Moultrie, but were repelled by patriots in what became their first significant victory.

Staff reports | Local businesswoman and philanthropist Linda Ketner will be presented with the inaugural Homeless to Hope Award at March 11 Homeless to Hope Benefit Concert. Sponsored by the Mayors’ Commission on Homelessness and Affordable Housing, the concert will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Gaillard Center Performance Hall.

The Mayors’ Commission on Homelessness and Affordable Housing (MCHAH), led by Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey, Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie and Summerville Mayor Wiley Johnson, established the award to recognize community members’ enduring contributions to alleviating homelessness.
Staff reports | The niece of a celebrated civil rights photographer will be at a special event Jan. 30 at Charleston County Public Library on Calhoun Street. Karen Berman will attend an event at the library at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 30 that celebrates photographs taken by her aunt, Ida Berman, in 1959 on Johns Island as residents were organizing to vote and figure for their rights. A display of photos have been at the library since the beginning of the month.

Lucille Whipper of Mount Pleasant and Charleston business leader Linda Ketner, two recent recipients of Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Charleston NAACP, will share their experiences breaking barriers in South Carolina at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church in a forum that starts 6 p.m. Jan. 23. The talk will be moderated by Patricia Williams Lessane, a cultural anthropologist and the executive director of the Avery Research Center at the College of Charleston. Staff reports (with 12 photos) | Up to 3,000 participants braved chilly, rainy Saturday weather to march from city parking garages to Brittlebank Park in Charleston to show local support for a national march for women’s rights in Washington. An estimated 500,000 marched in D.C. More than a million marched is events around the world, according to media reports.
For longtime Charleston leader Linda Ketner, the local march was a phenomenal start to future organizing to get more women in public office, including those who think, “not me.”
“The people who say ‘not me’ are generally those who will be motivated not by self-aggrandizement but by justice and public service,” Ketner told Charleston Currents. “Women need to be where the decisions are being made — now largely without our voices.
