WHAT WE LOVE: Floating and fishing on the Edisto

Hanahan photographer Chuck Boyd has a memory from his boyhood that he cherishes:

“I helped my granddad build a small square floating cabin on the Edisto River when I was a teenager in the late 1940s. It sat it on four empty 55-gallon drums and we floated and fished for catfish.

Gary Crossley of Charleston sent in a list of what he loves about the Charleston in which he was born.  He loves it so much, he tells us, that he even assigned the name Charleston as his son’s middle name. Gary’s list of reasons for loving Charleston (the city):

** The city is not too big or not too small.
** The cobblestone streets which had pirates like Blackbeard/Edward Teach and Stede Bonnet roaming back a hundred plus years ago….

WHAT WE LOVE: Charleston brings out the best in us

WHAT WE LOVE: Charleston brings out the best in us

Archie Burkel: “What do I love about Charleston? Let me count the ways. But if I did, it would take 100 things, not 100 words. So I will pull out of my hat what I believe puts our Holy City in a class by itself: You find yourself talking to total strangers.”

WHAT WE LOVE:  Minor league baseball

WHAT WE LOVE:  Minor league baseball

Minor league ball at Joe Riley Stadium is a thrill to behold.  It’s a thoroughly enjoyable experience with cold beer, hot dogs, boiled peanuts and great action.  There’s excitement after each half inning with special contests and races.  And then there’s the wacky promotions that draw fans and import delight.  It’s also fun watching kids learn the game and seniors recall how it was back in the days of yore.

WHAT WE LOVE: Breach Inlet and Orchestra League

Two readers were the first to submit entries into our new “What We Love About Charleston” feature.

Gabriel Andrade of Mount Pleasant pointed to Breach Inlet between Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms, noting it “is a great place to watch dolphins play during the summer right before sunset.”

Music lover David Savard of Charleston tapped the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League as something he loves – and he encouraged people to enjoy the organization 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 29 for its “Sippin’ Sangria on the Stono” party at the Island House on Johns Island.  He also promoted the organization’s scholarship concert at 1 p.m. May 6 at Bishop Gadsden on James Island.

NEW FEATURE:  What we love about Charleston

NEW FEATURE:  What we love about Charleston

We started Charleston Currents a decade ago because the area was missing something – a focus on good news, the kind of information that consistently celebrates the rich and good quality of life in the Lowcountry.

It’s easy for traditional media to write blaring headlines and loud promos about bad stuff that plagues more and more communities – traffic, crime, education, conflict.  It’s not tough to collect and publish news stories with negativity.  All you have to do is show up at official sources to read through police and court reports.

While bad news might drive eyeballs to TV screens and newspapers, bad news isn’t what keeps people living here and attracts them in droves to visit and relocate.  People move here because they love lots of various things – from the beaches, marshes and special places to the warmth of people, food, lifestyle and more.
