BRACK: Stop dividing America with words evoking racial terror

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | “Lynching” is a word that should be discarded from political discourse, especially throughout the South where thousands died from racial terror after the Civil War.

President Trump, now under intense scrutiny in a growing impeachment inquiry by the U.S. House of Representatives, tweeted in a diatribe in the wee hours of Oct. 22 that “All Republicans must remember what they are witnessing here – a lynching.”

No, Mr. President. You’re wrong. You are not being lynched. You are not being physically ripped from the White House, bundled up ropes and taken by a mob for execution by shooting, hanging, burning or something as horrible.

What is happening, sir, is that you are facing the very process you deny is happening – due process required by the Constitution to investigate whether you and your administration violated the law in discussions with a foreign country. For the U.S. House – Democrats and Republicans – to do less is for them to abrogate their sworn duty.

BRACK: Is Washington reaching a tipping point with Trump?

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | Are congressional Republicans in Washington reaching a tipping point over the continuing political theater and water-tortured presidency of Donald Trump?

If recent public comments by prominent South Carolina Republicans are any indication of the diminishing stature and respect in which Trump is held in Washington, then the president should be worried. Despite his party’s control of Congress, the hyper-sensitive, Twitter-impaired Trump can’t seem to climb out of a Washington swamp of his own making to be a player in promoting his agenda. For the first time in my lifetime, the president seems like a B-team sideline player watching a game being played on a muddy field in the rain. None of it is pretty.

BRACK: Time to think more deeply about state’s 2018 leaders

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | News that President-elect Donald Trump is considering S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley and Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster for prominent roles in his administration highlights how we need to start thinking now about who we want to lead South Carolina in the future.

With the 2016 elections over, Haley is considered a lame duck as her second term as governor ends in two years. As a rising minority star in the Republican party, it’s natural that Trump’s team would look for a big role for Haley, who met Thursday with Trump for what was called “a good discussion,” by a spokesman.

This photo was just too good to pass up. Editor and publisher Andy Brack says he was walking along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., on Friday afternoon and ran into a rally of women for Hillary Clinton for President. A block away loomed the Old Post Office, which GOP candidate Donald Trump has turned into one of his signature hotels. He apparently has joked that he’ll be living along Pennsylvania Avenue one way or another, regardless of how the election goes Tuesday. At left, you can see the post office’s tower. At right, you can see one woman’s poster, “Love trumps hate.”

FOCUS: Register to vote by Oct. 8

Staff reports | As the mother of all debates is set for tonight between Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump, you won’t be able to have your say at the polls Nov. 8 unless your registered to vote. The deadline to register in South Carolina is Oct. 8.

You might want to click the first link, especially if you haven’t voted in the last few elections, to make sure you haven’t been purged from voter rolls due to inactivity. [We suggest you check anyway, especially if you’ve moved in the last few years.]

According to the most recent information from the S.C. Election Commission, some 3,081,428 South Carolinians are registered to vote. In Charleston County, 274,547 people are registered to vote, the second largest number by county in the state.

BRACK: On Sanford, unemployment, airport parking, bike lane and Trump

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | A bunch of headlines — some good, some not — scream out for some kind of commentary, so let’s dive right in.

Our congressman, Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford, offered a self-serving opinion piece/lecture of Aug. 15 in The New York Times that urged his party’s presidential standard bearer, Donald Trump, to release his federal income tax returns.

He’s right, particularly to suggest that Trump’s “obstinacy” in releasing returns would have dramatic impacts in down-ballot elections and in future elections because others wouldn’t feel they had to be as transparent as candidates in the past.
