FOCUS:  Photos from a Lowcountry oyster roast

Staff reports  |  Local Realtor Rob Byko has a real eye for capturing the essence of the world around us.  Whether he’s scouting birds in the wild or people with his camera, his photos provide a real feel that puts you inside the spaces and places he sees.

In this issue, we welcome Byko, who lives on Sullivan’s Island, as a contributing photographer who will provide periodic photo essays of what he’s seeing around the area.  In today’s essay, you get a real feel for the grittiness and steaminess of a Lowcountry oyster roast. It’s easy to smell and taste the briny sweetness of oysters as they left the cooker and were dumped on the tables of hungry patrons of a roast earlier this month on Sullivan’s Island.  Enjoy these — and future — photos from Rob.

PHOTO ESSAY: Neglecting part of our history

PHOTO ESSAY: Neglecting part of our history

By Don Campagna, special to Charleston Currents  | During World War Two, Charleston was homeport for 23 Army-operated hospital ships and was where 75,000 of those most grievously wounded in the European and African campaigns returned to America.

But now, Palmetto Railway, a division of the S.C. Department of Commerce, is in the process of demolishing buildings on the National Register of Historic Places that are located in the Charleston Naval Hospital Historic District in North Charleston.

PHOTO ESSAY:  YallFest

Staff reports  |  Hundreds of book lovers flooded the upper King Street blocks around Blue Bicycle Books on Friday and Saturday to meet young adult authors, buy books, enjoy the weather and talk about books during the YallFest, the annual Charleston Young Adult Book Festival.

Sixth-grader Ellie Brack, now a sometimes contributing photographer for Charleston Currents, could get extra credit at her school by snapping at least 10 photos of the event and putting them in a display.  We thought you’d like to see the event in her eyes:

FOCUS, photo essay:  Santee Cooper crews restore power

Staff reports  |  Electrical power started popping off early Saturday as Hurricane Florence lingered, dumping rain throughout eastern North Carolina, the Grand Strand and Pee Dee.  More than a million reportedly lost power in North Carolina.  In South Carolina in Santee Cooper’s retail service area, more than 50,000 customers lost power in the storm.

But the utility’s crews, ready for days to jump into action, quickly got to work to restore service to homes and 21 transmission delivery points, most of which were in the North Myrtle Beach-Little River region, according to spokesman Mollie Gore.

Crews, who battled foul weather and wind for hours, were able to turn on the lights to 48,000 customers by Sunday afternoon – a huge effort after a huge storm.
