Contributing photographer Michael Kaynard took an annual trip to Hampton Park over the weekend to photograph magnolias in all of their glory. He writes, “Magnolias vary a great deal. Some are beautiful when they first bloom and others when they are near their end. They are all beautiful in their own way. I think there is a parallel that can be drawn regarding people. Embrace the beauty in all of us, no matter how different we are.”

By Robin Welch, special to Charleston Currents | In just a few short weeks, SCIWAY will turn 21, which means we are now old enough to buy a good stiff drink!
As it turns out, we may need one. Over the past two decades, we’ve grown from a simple online portal with links to 23 other South Carolina websites – all that existed at the time – into a wide-ranging collection of original maps, detailed essays, and useful guides to state and local resources, including such things as S.C. events, S.C. elections, S.C. pronunciations, and – especially important this time of year – S.C. taxes.
If you want proof positive that reading can pay off, just talk to the Charleston Animal Society which last week received a $6938.35 contribution generated by a read-a-thon by elementary students at Charles Towne Montessori in West Ashley.
Each spring, the school, the only internationally-accredited Montessori school in the state, asks student teams to develop a class project. About eight teams of students pick different nonprofits they want to help and follow-up with a research-packed presentation. The class then votes on which charity to support.
Then the students solicit donations from family members, friends and neighbors to sponsor how much they read on a special day of reading at the school. (We’ve learned long ago, thanks to picture books, that it is best to sponsor a set amount, such as $30, instead of a per-page fee.)

Staff reports (with 12 photos) | Up to 3,000 participants braved chilly, rainy Saturday weather to march from city parking garages to Brittlebank Park in Charleston to show local support for a national march for women’s rights in Washington. An estimated 500,000 marched in D.C. More than a million marched is events around the world, according to media reports.
For longtime Charleston leader Linda Ketner, the local march was a phenomenal start to future organizing to get more women in public office, including those who think, “not me.”
“The people who say ‘not me’ are generally those who will be motivated not by self-aggrandizement but by justice and public service,” Ketner told Charleston Currents. “Women need to be where the decisions are being made — now largely without our voices.
Contributing photographer Michael Kaynard has been hoofing it around the peninsula in recent days finding lots of pretty and neat holiday wreathes on local doors.
You’ll see a lot of greenery, but every now and then you’ll find something a little different — a cast bird wrapped in holiday finery or pieces of copper bent into the shape of a wreath. In addition to driving around and looking at lights this holiday season, take a look at the ingenuity that people put into the wreathes on their doors.

By Michael Kaynard, contributing photographer | Our impression of the area and the people was very positive. We found the Amish and Mennonites we met to be hard-working and very nice people. We would enjoy returning there again.
As a matter of fact, we thought southern Pennsylvania was very pretty and lush. I would suggest that travelers get off the interstate and main roads and see the real America.
Australian photojournalist Bill Hawker spent a recent week in Perpignan, France, attending Visa Pour L’Image, an international festival of photojournalism. While in the city, which is the capital of the Pyrenees-Orientals department in the south of France, he snapped this photo (above) of a woman kneeling in prayer inside the Eglise Saint Mathieu. It reflected, he said, a much quieter side to Perpignan than experienced throughout most of the week.
