BRACK: Steyer’s barbecue visit showed his passion, pragmatism

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | It’s been two weeks since Tom Steyer came over for supper.

On a campaign swing through Charleston, the billionaire presidential candidate sat down with a few people to eat Rodney Scott’s awesome barbecue and ribs and have a beer. Well, he actually had one glass of wine. He is, after all, from California. I didn’t intend to write about this visit because I didn’t want it to seem like an ad for a guy running for the Democratic nomination. (I still don’t know who I’ll vote for in the February primary; there is no GOP primary, so I won’t be voting in that one.)

GOOD NEWS: Blue Jamboree to attract big-name Democrats in October

Staff reports | Thousands of Democrats will flock to a North Charleston field Oct. 5 to see big-name presidential candidates as the Charleston County Democratic Party holds its 2019 Blue Jamboree.

The event, which has been growing since it started in 2010 with 150 people, is getting a lot of attention due to the 2020 presidential contest with more than 2,000 tickets already being sold, according to the county party.

FOCUS: Cherny asks what would make your life better

By Dimitri Cherny, special to Charleston Currents | What one or two things could the federal government do to make your life better?

That’s the question I’ve been asking everyone I meet on my www.BIKINGtheLowcountry.us adventure. I’ve now traveled, by bike or canoe, more than 550 miles over 47 days and asked hundreds of people that question. We’re a very diverse group here in the Lowcountry — racially, ethnically, religiously, politically, ideologically, economically, educationally, and of all ages. But after asking this question of hundreds of people, we ALL seem to agree on five things.

1. Universal single-payer healthcare.
2. Quality debt-free public education.
3. Strengthening Social security.
4. Improving the veteran’s support system,
5. Getting money out of politics.

BRACK: Incumbents have big advantages in June primary races

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | After a fantastic couple of months away from yard signs and blaring television advertising, campaigning is upon us again. Just look out your car windows as you are driving on any major thoroughfare.

Two months from now, voters — mostly those who vote in Republican primaries — will head to the polls to pick candidates for state and federal offices. In many cases, thanks to gerrymandering of political districts, the primary will be the real election as those who win will face little or token opposition in the fall.
