MY TURN, McCoy-Lawrence: Voters aren’t getting voting system they deserve

By Christe McCoy-Lawrence, exclusive to Statehouse Report  | The League of Women Voters of South Carolina is, of course, distressed that the state has chosen to pay more money to get less of a voting system than what it could have obtained and than what the citizens of South Carolina deserve.

We had hoped for a new voting system that was primarily hand-marked paper ballots scanned at the precinct.  We know that such a system could have been acquired for about half the cost of the planned new system.

CALENDAR, July 2+: Lots to do for July 4 celebration, more

Staff reports  |  There are lots of ways to enjoy the mid-week July 4 holiday in the Lowcountry.  If you’re looking for great places to watch fireworks, we suggest that you get on the top of some tall building … because you can see more than one display on the holiday night.  Our past favorite:  The round Holiday Inn on the Ashley River.  (It’s air-conditioned and you can get a beer!)

Some fireworks venues and locations to enjoy the shows:

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, at podium, discusses formation of the Senate Opportunity Caucus at a Capitol Hill press conference in September.

BRACK: It’s just common sense for Scott to stay in Senate

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | Perhaps the best job in the world for anyone passionate about policy and politics is to be a United States senator.

It pays well. You get to travel. You become part of an exclusive club where you can actually do big, meaningful things. You learn about a lot of different topics. And it can be a special kind of wonky fun, despite long hours, politicking, fund-raising and endless meetings.

PHOTO: Cool weather will tip-toe in slowly

YOU MAY NOT see fog like this until it gets a little cooler, but hard as it may be to believe, it will cool off soon. Early in the morning, it is almost as if you can smell fall tip-toeing toward Charleston. Then, of course, the blast furnace opens and the heat index rises above 100 degrees. Contributing photographer Michael Kaynard snapped this shot in January 2013 along the Wappoo Cut.

FEEDBACK: Rebutting column called “The recoil of hope”

Billy Pierce, Hartsville: “I worry about an America where everyone expects the government and the working taxpayers to guarantee them at least a $15/hour job (but don’t expect them to work overtime or have good attendance), child care, food, housing, health insurance and the latest iPhone! But then they don’t expect to pay taxes or want all of it refunded with Earned Income Credits!”
