REVIEW: The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story

By Vivek J. Tiwary

00icon_recommendedSettling the debate, Paul McCartney once said “If anyone’s the fifth Beatle, it’s Brian Epstein.” This graphic novel explores, in vivid color, the life of the man who is the subject of the song “Baby, You’re a Rich Man.” It tells (and shows) the ambitious nature of a well-to-do, homosexual man growing up in the oppressive shadow of his own expectations and the anti-gay and anti-Semitic culture of Liverpool in the 1960s.

Certainly the Beatles were immensely talented musicians, singers and songwriters, but this book causes one to consider if all of that talent might have gone neglected if not for Epstein’s ambition and cunning. Fans of classic rock, those who are intrigued by the behind-the-scenes world of the recording industry, and aficionados of gorgeous graphic artistry will likely appreciate this book.
