REVIEW: Harriet Wolf’s Seventh Book of Wonders

REVIEW: Harriet Wolf’s Seventh Book of Wonders

A novel by Julianna Baggott: Harriet Wolf’s Seventh Book of Wonders is a sweeping family saga that spans four generations of Wolf women and their countless family secrets. Harriet Wolf is the famously reclusive author of a wildly successful series that chronicles the love and life of Daisy and Weldon. However, at the time of Harriet’s death, the seventh and final book has not been published and speculations abound— did Harriet Wolf write the seventh book at all? If so, where it is? If the book does exist, it could be worth millions.

HISTORY: Bamberg County

HISTORY: Bamberg County

S.C. Encyclopedia | Bamberg County, located in the inner coastal plain in south-central South Carolina, was formed from the southeastern section of Barnwell County in 1897. It is named for Francis Marion Bamberg (1838–1905), the grandson of John Bamberg, who arrived in the area in 1798 and was thought to have originally come from Bavaria before stopping in Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War period.

PHOTO: Foamy frame

As waves crashed into a seawall, ChristiAnn Nace of North Charleston snapped this photo of the Morris Island Lighthouse about a month ago. Nace, who works at the Sea Islands Chamber of Commerce on Johns Island, notes, “This was one of the highlights of my photography hobby. I walked away soaked but determined that the photo was well worth the chilly weather!” More: ClickNGoMarketing.com

FOCUS: Tales about Lowcountry haints aren’t just for Halloween

By Embe Charpentier, special to Charleston Currents | Consider the last place among your travels that possessed a mythology all its own. Perhaps you heard a Caribbean fable after a Junkanoo parade, were regaled by an Appalachian storyteller or listened to a legend of Marie Laveau’s reign as voodoo queen of New Orleans. When you review the trip in your mind years later, the folklore lives on as intimately as the tastes, sights, and sounds of the region.

Charleston’s peculiar myths left me with an irresistible need to research. Where else do people so actively resist the incursion of the supernatural? Charlestonians paint a porch ceiling “haint blue.” Why?

BRACK: State needs better balance in growing economy

BRACK: State needs better balance in growing economy

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | The traditional way states grow jobs is to lure new plants and investment from outside. But that strategy is being challenged by community developers who say it’s smarter to grow from within.

A new report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says states should build strong economies by focusing on “producing more home-grown entrepreneurs and on helping startups and young, fast-growing firms already located in the state to survive and to grow, not on cutting taxes and trying to lure businesses from other states.” The study says new data show home-grown jobs comprise about 80 percent of total jobs created in states.

MYSTERY: Airplane on a stick

Since you’ve had a couple of pretty easy weeks at the mystery photo, here’s something that is pretty tough — an airplane sculpture on a pole that contributing photographer Michael Kaynard snapped recently on a trip down a rural road. Hint: It’s not in Charleston County, but is within 100 miles or so. Send your best guess to: editor@charlestoncurrents.com — and make sure to include the name of the town in which you live.

REVIEW: Fates and Furies

REVIEW: Fates and Furies

Melissa Tunstall: “Every story has more than one side to it — particularly marriages, which is central to Laura Groff’s Fates and Furies. However, Groff does not intend to tell a story about everyone’s marriage. No, for Groff, Fates and Furies is truly only about Mathilde and Lancelot, who goes by the nickname Lotto.”
