Staff reports | Julian Wiles, founder and producing artistic director of Charleston Stage, shared a message with friends of the organization to reassure friends that the latest unpleasantness of people sheltering in place wouldn’t last forever. And he offered an interesting insight highlighting how Charleston has survived scourges in the past:
Staff reports | The number of people flying in and out of Charleston International Airport in October increased 13 percent over 2017. That puts the airport on target to exceed 4 million passengers by the end of 2018.
“It has been an exciting year at Charleston International Airport,” said Paul G. Campbell Jr., Executive Director and CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Authority. “Our legacy air carriers are busier than ever and our new airlines are receiving great support from the Lowcountry.”
Staff reports | British Airways has announced plans for new, nonstop air service between Charleston and London’s Heathrow Airport. The twice-weekly flight, slated to start in April 2019, marks the first transatlantic passenger flight from the Lowcountry and the State of South Carolina.
“We are ushering in a new day for this region and our state as we launch this flight to a premier European destination,” said Paul Campbell, CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Authority.
Staff reports | Charleston International Airport has installed a state-of-the-art bus shelter to accommodate an increasing number of passengers and airport workers riding Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) vehicles to and from the airport.
“With passenger numbers booming at Charleston International Airport, we couldn’t be happier that the Aviation Authority has stepped up to partner in such a big way,” said CARTA board chairman Mike Seekings, who also is a Charleston city council member. “As more visitors than ever come to the Charleston area, we have to mitigate traffic impacts throughout the region, and a $3.50 direct connection from the airport to downtown is one way to do just that.”
Staff reports | As many as 100,000 people are expected to fly into or out of Charleston International Airport over the Thanksgiving holiday making it the busiest time of the year for the facility.
Last year, just over 95,000 passengers came through the airport during Thanksgiving. And so far this year, passenger counts are up over last year, which airport Executive Director and CEO Paul G. Campbell Jr. said he expected to continue through the end of the year.
“We are having a great year and we will reach, and possibly top, 4 million passengers in 2017,” Campbell said in a press release. “This next week we expect to be very busy with Thanksgiving travelers so we encourage everyone to plan ahead and arrive at the airport early.”
Staff reports | A new study shows Charleston International Airport is one of the best-managed airports in the country.
With operating revenue of $30.4 million and operating expenses of $15 million, the Charleston airport ranks sixth in a new Airport Power Ranking of 89 major American airports. The ranking was developed by the American City Business Journals with research from its 43 newsrooms and analysis by faculty at the Wake Forest University School of Business.
“It’s recognition by outside people about how well this airport is run, how efficient it is and how we are growing,” said airport director Paul Campbell in an interview.
