CALENDAR: Johns Island concert series to open May 1

Staff reports  |  Bring your chairs or blanket and your love of music with the opening of the new Johns Island Concert Series on May 1 at Johns Island County Park. The May 1 concert will feature the shag and beach music of Vinyl Daze , followed by the reggae sounds of Mystic Vibrations on June 5 and the Motown sounds of The Legacy on June 10.  For each show, gates open at 6 p.m. with music beginning at 7 p.m.  Shows end by 9:30 p.m.

PHOTO ESSAY: West Ashley Greenway needs a little tender loving care

Staff reports  |  If there’s one thing that the coronavirus pandemic has done, it’s made people get outside more often.  The perfect testament is the West Ashley Greenway, which seems busier than ever.  

But the upside of more use also means there’s more trash and wear on what essentially is a walking park that stretches for miles. 

This photo essay shows conditions along the greenway at various West Ashley intersections with city streets.

If you want to let the city know what you think about its parks, the city is undertaking an update to its comprehensive plan (see news briefs), which includes seeking input about parks and recreation.

GOOD NEWS: Airport experiences 6.2 percent passenger growth

Staff reports | Charleston International Airport had 7 percent more people heading to one of 18 non-stop destinations in the first four months of the year, compared to last year in what is a traditionally slower traveling season. In the same period, 5.6 percent more people flew into the airport.

Also in Good News: Charleston County Public Library’s new reusable bags; Charleston School of Law President Ed Bell’s accolade; and Sea Island cotton again being grown here at McLeod Plantation.

New at CofC: An MFA in creative writing — “The two-year, full-residency program, which begins in the fall of 2016 pending approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Schools, is designed to sharpen the writing skills of graduate students interested in fiction and poetry. ” Also: Singing Valentine’s, she-crab celebration and a new Charleston County park.

This picture says a million things

Above is a photo of officials from MWV Specialty Chemicals & Community Development and Land Management presenting a check for more than $1 million to the Trident United Way. MWV is the first company in Lowcountry history to raise at least a million dollars for the charity.
