Staff reports | As scorching summer temps cool and fall creeps in, it’s time for many favorite farmers markets in the area to pack it in until next spring. Luckily, there are still a few more weeks to get your farmers-market fix — and even some markets that say open year-round. We’ve rounded up the closing dates of local farmers markets, organized by month:
Staff reports | The Charleston County Public Library wants to hear stories about restaurant integration in the area. Partnering with The Post and Courier newspaper, the library is seeking to document people’s earliest memories of dining in white-owned restaurants.
Staff reports | The Charleston Defense Contractors Association (CDCA), a non-profit advocacy group for the defense industry in the Southeast, on Friday announced student winners of the 7th Annual Student Mobile App Competition’
The organization annually holds a mobile app contest for students from middle school through graduate school to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and careers. The contest allows students to develop creative unique applications that ae able to run on either iOS phone or Android platforms to solve a challenge. They are judged by sponsors and attendees at the event. Winners share STEM-related contest awards of $10,000 in prizes, scholarships and future jobs.

Staff reports | The American Red Cross has mobilized thousands of trained disaster relief workers, truckloads of supplies and thousands of meals to support the response effort following the hurricane that hit Texas over the weekend.

Charleston’s local economy gets a direct infusion of nearly $20 million. A 2011 economic impact study stated $18.3 million and that was several years ago in a much more tenuous market environment. To add to the impact the Bridge Run was also the first weekend of spring break and the beginning of Easter week.
