MYSTERY: Rigging could be a clue

Contributing photographer Michael Kaynard sent along this photo, slightly retouched to remove the ship’s name.  What and where is it?  Send your best guess to:  editor@charlestoncurrents.com — and make sure to include the name of the town in which you live.

Last issue’s photo, also by Kaynard, showed a Kress Building, common across the country 100 years or so back.  While some guessers thought it might be in Charleston or Asheville, both of which have old Kress stores, this one is actually in San Antonio, Texas.  Hats off to Marc Jacob of Ravenel, who gave us the exact address, and George Graf of Palmyra, Va., who shared:  “The Kress Building on Houston Street in downtown San Antonio.  The dime store was designed by Brooklyn-born architect Edward Sibbert, who designed most of the stores for the nationwide chain.”
