By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | The enormity of anti-science fervor in the Republican-controlled South Carolina legislature that will keep students, most unvaccinated, from wearing masks is mind-blowingly ignorant.
As a result, too many children will get or spread coronavirus — now worse than last year at this time because of a new, more contagious strain — and more will suffer. Children and more adults may die, thanks to the lame-brained GOP General Assembly’s lockstep denial of science.

Staff reports | Former U.S. Rep. and current Democratic gubernatorial candidate Joe Cunningham of Charleston last week pushed for recreational and medicinal legalization of marijuana at the state level.
“It’s time for elected officials to admit that what we are doing has not been working although there are career politicians who would rather live in the past,” the 39-year-old Cunningham said in a veiled reference to GOP Gov. Henry McMaster, 74.
By Andy Brack | Normalcy is slowly approaching after the lost year of COVID-19. As of Thursday, the state had received 2.5 million doses of vaccine. Medical professionals so far have administered 1.8 million doses, which means the state has used 72 percent of the on-hand supply that is continuing to come into the Palmetto State.

Staff reports | Charleston police say an internal assessment of May 30-31 protests downtown show the agency has learned, but a coalition of activists is pushing back.
During the presentation of the final after-action report during Tuesday’s Public Safety Committee meeting, Chief Luther Reynolds said the report was made to include the perspectives of officers, community leaders, business owners, residents, protesters and arrested criminal offenders.
