MYSTERY PHOTO: Wild blue yonder

MYSTERY PHOTO: Wild blue yonder

This photo is in Charlston County, but it might not be where you expect it to be.  There’s a big clue in the middle of it, but where is it?  Send your guess to:  editor@charlestoncurrents.com.  And don’t forget to include your name and the town in which you live.

Our previous Mystery Photo: The Aug. 27 mystery had a big clue at the left of the picture with a sign that said, “Loggerhead turtle area.”  But which one?  Folly Beach?  St. Helena Island?  Nope.  It was, as a couple of sleuths figured out, the beach at Edisto Island State Park near a park building that overlooks the dunes..

PHOTOS: Turtle basks

With February being more balmy than usual, it wasn’t surprising for contributing photographer Michael Kaynard to find turtles lapping up the sun during a recent photo shoot at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. We’re probably in for a cold snap or two still, but with pollen bombs going off from area trees, the signs of spring are, ahem, in the air.

HISTORY: Loggerhead turtle, state reptile

S.C. Encyclopedia | The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), a threatened species, was named the state reptile in an act signed by Gov. Carroll Campbell on June 1, 1988. Recognizing the loggerhead as “an important part of the marine ecosystem” and that South Carolina’s coastline provides “some of the most pristine nesting areas” for the turtle on the East Coast, the General Assembly declared that the state’s responsibility is “to preserve and protect our wildlife and natural resources.”

PHOTO: It’s a turtle tank (not a shark tank)

This sea turtle at the S.C. Aquarium is having a ball swimming in the big tank. Some fun facts according to the Aquarium: Sea turtles have small brains and are opportunistic feeders who eat just about anything. Loggerheads are the state reptile. Loggerheads, classified as threatened since 1978, have lived on earth for about 150 million years — before even the times of dinosaurs. Photo by Courtenay Brack.
