BRACK: Lawmakers need to ask right questions on Santee Cooper

BRACK: Lawmakers need to ask right questions on Santee Cooper

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher    |  Embarrassed by creating a controversial law that allowed utility companies to charge customers for projects that were not complete, the General Assembly wants to make it all go away.

So they essentially got rid of the 2007 Base Load Review Act after two power companies, the private SCE&G and the public Santee Cooper, suffered the humiliating failure in 2017 of a $9 billion project to build a nuclear plant in Fairfield County.  Since then, a Virginia company swept in to take over SCE&G and its parent, SCANA, and Santee Cooper became the legislature’s favorite whipping boy.

Let’s pray for an atypical legislative year — one in which officials get real things accomplished.  Rather than waste time on meaningless bills, legislators need to get these five things right, once and for all …

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |  A weekend family trip to New York City was simply delightful, an adjective we never thought of using to describe the Big Apple.

The weather was moderate. People were relatively friendly.  The bagels and pizza were awesome. And two attractions provided a “wow” that still lingers.

BRACK: Give local governments, utilities a pat on the back

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  | Two smells provide vivid memories of Hurricane Hugo.

The first came just after the storm as the resin scent of snapped pine trees filled a car during a drive along Interstate 26 toward Charleston.  The air smelled like an open bottle of Pine-Sol. Days later, thanks to decomposing piles of leaves, molding carpets, rotting food and mildewed garbage, came the overwhelming stink of rot.

Fresh and clean, followed by cloying decay.
