BRACK: Sales tax holiday was lipstick on policy pig

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |   Let’s see how excited we got about the sales tax holiday put on by the state over the past weekend: Whoop.  Nope.  Hooray.  Nah.  Yahoo.  Not quite.

South Carolina’s annual sales tax holiday is not only very bad public policy, it isn’t pandemic-friendly.  In normal circumstances, the tax-free weekend is a bad idea because of the multiple inequities it creates.  But during the coronavirus pandemic, it is extra risky because it encourages people to get out to shop when they’d be smarter by staying at home.

FEEDBACK: On early education and sales tax holidays

FEEDBACK: On early education and sales tax holidays

George Graf, Palmyra, Va.: I strongly agree with Mr. Kaynard, but would like to add my two cents. Concerning education and good jobs, I also strongly believe that we as an American society and more so, the parents need to address the problem with a child’s education at an early age. Many research studies have shown that the overwhelming majority of children of a low socio-economic class are far behind higher economic classes on the first day of formal schooling.

BRACK: Sales tax holiday gimmick is here again

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | Pens, pencils and paper. Blankets, bed spreads and shower curtains. Adult diapers, bonnets, bridal gowns, corsets, costumes, earmuffs, ice skates, ski boots and tuxedos.

All are among the 100-plus exempt items that can be purchased Aug. 5-7 without paying the 6 percent state sales tax during South Carolina’s 17th sales tax holiday. Consumers will save an estimated $2.25 million in the state tax plus any local sales tax that may apply.
