As state legislators prepare to get back into the policy swing of things next week, we thought you might enjoy learning more about Ariail’s craft of illustrating an editorial comment, often with a little humor added for good measure.
Q: Describe what makes a good political cartoon?
ARIAIL: I think a good political cartoon should be topical and easily understood while imparting a valid message or opinion using good drawing style and, when possible, humor.
By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | It’s pretty sad – and kind of amazing – that a 10-year-old can reach a common-sense conclusion that seems to elude a majority of Einstein members of Charleston City Council and its planning commission.
“Daddy, we don’t need any more hotels,” my daughter said while looking recently at the skyline pollution of crane after crane.
No, honey, we don’t. What we need are city leaders who will start listening and thinking about the continuing glut of hotels and what greed to build more will cause down the line.
Talented Columbia cartoonist and Statehouse Report fan Robert Ariail sent along this Charleston-centric cartoon, blending the demolition of a historic house that can’t be saved with the ever-present shroud that developers keep erecting more hotels on the peninsula, leaving many residents feeling that the historic area is becoming more of a museum than a city.
