PHOTO ESSAY: Neglecting part of our history

PHOTO ESSAY: Neglecting part of our history

By Don Campagna, special to Charleston Currents  | During World War Two, Charleston was homeport for 23 Army-operated hospital ships and was where 75,000 of those most grievously wounded in the European and African campaigns returned to America.

But now, Palmetto Railway, a division of the S.C. Department of Commerce, is in the process of demolishing buildings on the National Register of Historic Places that are located in the Charleston Naval Hospital Historic District in North Charleston.

Joe Mendelsohn, Charleston: “On last week’s “Views from the water” photo essay:  I remember climbing up that ladder with my friend, Crayton Walters, leading the way. The pilot boat pulled away and there was nothing, but ocean under me.”

PHOTO ESSAY: Bill’s European vacation

Special to Charleston Currents

Australian photojournalist Bill Hawker, who offered pictures of Charleston and London earlier this year, sent along some snaps of a summer project in which he is documenting the beauty of continental Europe for the summer.

You’ll find photos of everything from bikers in the Tour de France in the French Alps to enjoying bikes and canals in Amsterdam and seeing the scenes in Prague.

Enjoy!

FOCUS, photo essay: Rain, rain go away

FOCUS, photo essay: Rain, rain go away

Photo essay: Dale Poulnot of Charleston wanted to know what Charleston harbor looked like around high tide during Saturday’s deluge of rain. So she stepped outside, walked to the Battery and snapped this photo. “I thought it was scary spectacular!” she told us. “Wasn’t surprised since it was a strong east wind and high tide. Sure made me glad that Hugo came at low tide!” For getting out in the storm and taking a striking photo of something familiar, she’s top winner of our first (and we hope last) Rain Photo Contest. Her prize: A can of beef stew!

PHOTOS: The faces of Cuba

Set aside political ideologies and international affairs. Cuba, at its heart, is defined by her people, a mélange of black, brown and white seemingly filled with a joie de vivre captured in quick smiles, infectious rumba and a welcoming spirit.

Here are several photos that show some of the faces of Cuba encountered during a nine-day August trip organized by Magnolia Plantation and Gardens.
