BRACK: Anti-mask mandate will hurt South Carolina’s children

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  | The enormity of anti-science fervor in the Republican-controlled South Carolina legislature that will keep students, most unvaccinated, from wearing masks is mind-blowingly ignorant.

As a result, too many children will get or spread coronavirus — now worse than last year at this time because of a new, more contagious strain — and more will suffer.  Children and more adults may die, thanks to the lame-brained GOP General Assembly’s lockstep denial of science.

BRACK: Big pay hikes in Columbia leave a stench

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |  South Carolina’s governor earns $106,078 a year, making him the 3,248th (*) highest paid state employee as of April.

* (Of course there’s a caveat in South Carolina.  The S.C. Department of Administration’s salary search portal of the 23,328 state employees who earn more than $50,000 does not include people who work at several agencies, such as the legislature, the courts, Santee Cooper and the S.C. State Ports Authority. And we know some of those folks earn money by the bucket.)

FOCUS: Group plans to plant 3.3 million trees on Earth Day

By Skyler Baldwin  |  PowerPlantSC is prepping for what may be a record-setting loblolly pine tree planting event across South Carolina. The group estimates more than 3.3 million trees will be planted throughout the Palmetto State on Earth Day, April 22.

Several state groups have signed on to the event, conceived and directed by global expedition leader and S.C. Floodwater Commission Chairman Tom Mullikin of Camden. PowerPlantSC will involve the Boy Scouts, 4-H Club members, Future Farmers of America, schools and other key partners in the state’s 46 counties.

State leaders including Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette will participate in the statewide effort as well. “We are not only planting and growing trees, but this is about growing our economy and growing our state,” Evette said.

BRACK: Vaccinations dampening virus, but pandemic ain’t over yet

By Andy Brack | Normalcy is slowly approaching after the lost year of COVID-19.  As of Thursday, the state had received 2.5 million doses of vaccine. Medical professionals so far have administered 1.8 million doses, which means the state has used 72 percent of the on-hand supply that is continuing to come into the Palmetto State.

NEWS BRIEFS: Judge issues temporary order blocking new abortion law

Staff reports  |  A federal judge on Friday issued a temporary restraining order on the after S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster signed a bill that effectively banned most abortions, one of his top priorities since he took office more than four years ago. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic and Greenville Women’s Clinic immediately sued in federal court to block it.

BRACK: Mind-numbing, time-wasting abortion bill on table again

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |  Here we go again.  South Carolina is wading into a divisive abortion debate before anything else happens in the state Senate to appease the GOP’s conservative base.  It’s a futile effort that’s ultimately unconstitutional and a huge waste of time and money.

But these legislator knuckleheads don’t really care. They want to ram it through now that the state Senate has 30 Republican votes to 16 seats held by Democrats.

FOCUS: Vigorous government action needed to curb spread of virus

FOCUS: Vigorous government action needed to curb spread of virus

By Fred Palm, contributing editor  |  Correct and effective state action to battle COVID-19 is required. Now. Otherwise, more lives and livelihoods across South Carolina will suffer as a third wave descends upon the state.

Gov. Henry McMaster’s Oct. 23 public relations visit to Myrtle Beach revealed a guy who is in over his head with no way out. That means we have no way out.

“We’re vigilant. We’re trying to do our best,” he said during the visit. “We’ve heard from a lot of people in a lot of different kind of businesses; we’re taking all of that into consideration. These restrictions, it’s uncomfortable. Sometimes it imposes great hardship; we’re aware of that. All of these decisions are made not quickly.”
