BRACK: Anti-mask mandate will hurt South Carolina’s children

BRACK: Anti-mask mandate will hurt South Carolina’s children

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  | The enormity of anti-science fervor in the Republican-controlled South Carolina legislature that will keep students, most unvaccinated, from wearing masks is mind-blowingly ignorant.

As a result, too many children will get or spread coronavirus — now worse than last year at this time because of a new, more contagious strain — and more will suffer.  Children and more adults may die, thanks to the lame-brained GOP General Assembly’s lockstep denial of science.

BRACK:  McMaster needs to issue statewide mask order

BRACK:  McMaster needs to issue statewide mask order

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |  You wouldn’t walk barefoot and bare-chested into a shop, especially if it had a sign on a door that said, “No shoes. No shirt. No service.”  To do so would be gross and rude.

So why in the world are people getting all bent out of shape when “No mask” becomes the same kind of societal no-no?  At a time when more than 1,000 people in our state are picking up coronavirus every day, not wearing a mask in public is about as smart as walking barefoot on sun-baked pavement on a 100-degree day.

BRACK:  Just wear the dang mask

BRACK:  Just wear the dang mask

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher   |  The woman and her two children walked into the house, quickly closing the door because it was a blustery winter day.  They arrived to celebrate a daughter’s birthday.

The boy joined the other kids.  The little girl, much younger, stuck near her mother.  She was wearing a coat but had bare feet.  Mucus bubbled around her nose.  She was whiny.  And obviously sick.

FOCUS: Start printing masks now

FOCUS: Start printing masks now

By Janet Segal, special to Charleston Currents  | Here’s an idea: Local governments and the state — the county, its libraries, technical colleges and the like — should put idle 3-D printers to use now to print masks to keep our medical workers safe.

I am self-quarantining at home with two sewing machines, fabric, a pattern from the internet and I have been sewing facemasks.

According to my nursing friends, these will be helpful for elderly patients and their caregivers and for people outside the home who must go shopping. But they will fall apart after multiple washings. They are well-made but not designed for long-term use.

There are, however, masks that can stand up to repeated sterilizing — those made of plastic on 3-D printers.
