GOOD NEWS: New mystery has S.C. political connection from 200 years ago

Staff reports | A new mystery novel with political and historical connections to Hamiltonian days gone by will be available Nov. 1 when Charleston author Andra Watkins’ “Hard to Die” hits national bookstores.

Watkins, who is a New York Times bestselling author for a book chronicling her walk of the Natchez Trace, will offer remarks on the new novel at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the main library on Calhoun Street in Charleston. She’ll make local history come alive by answering questions like: Where did George Washington have a drink? Did Aaron Burr visit a favorite haunt?

GOOD NEWS: City launches online platform for boards, commissions

Staff reports | With more than 40 boards and commissions, the city of Charleston has long encouraged independent citizen oversight and participation in local government—at least in theory, according to a press release last week.

But with the debut of Boards+, a new city website that allows citizens to view the members, duties and actions of city boards, committees and commissions and to apply for open positions as they become available, that theory is now becoming a reality for residents throughout the Charleston area.

GOOD NEWS: Charleston to host 14th annual First Day Festival

The City of Charleston will host the 14th Annual First Day Festival from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 14 at Liberty Square at the S.C. Aquarium and the Charleston Maritime Center. The First Day Festival is a celebration of education and provides children and families with information on educational services in the community, as well as a fun day together. Also: Library back to school celebration and Magnolia Plantation’s dog adoptions.

GOOD NEWS: Ladybugs to fly free at Magnolia Gardens

Staff reports | Some 150,000 ladybugs will be released July 23 at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in what has become the Lowcountry’s largest release of the environmentally friendly insect. It’s an event where kids can have fun and win prizes, too. ALSO: Rockin’ the River concert series in North Charleston; Latin beats at Kiawah.

Bill Hawker, a photojournalist from Sydney, Australia, toured the area last week and offers these snapshots of what he saw in the Charleston area. Hawker, who has just completed a semester of study at the University of Texas to wrap up a master’s degree in communication, says he’ll send more photos from summer visits to Europe.

In the past, though, contributing photographer Michael Kaynard snapped photos of alligators or turtles — or both — sunning in a swampy area around the attraction. This time, he found a duck and her seven — or eight — ducklings. How many do you see?
