GOOD NEWS: Design presented tonight for new St. Paul’s library

Staff reports | The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) will host a community meeting 7 p.m. June 12 to show updated designs for the new St. Paul’s Branch library. The meeting will be in the cafeteria of the E.B. Ellington Elementary School, 55444 Old Jacksonboro Road, Ravenel.

GOOD NEWS: Summer reading programs start Thursday at local libraries

Staff reports | Charleston County Public Library this week will kick off its 2017 Summer Reading Programs, which run from June 1 through July 31 and feature hundreds of free events and fun prizes for participants of all ages.

Pre-registration is already underway, and the library offers programs designed for the following age groups:

GOOD NEWS: Veterans get hunger relief help, more

Staff reports | Soldiers’ Angels Hunger Relief Program on Friday hosted a Veteran Mobile Food Distribution in the Hagood Stadium parking lot of The Citadel to help provide food assistance to more than 200 low-income, at-risk and homeless veterans from the Charleston-Area. The distribution was conducted in partnership with The Citadel and the Lowcountry Food Bank. Also in this section is Good News about an Easter Egg Hunt at Magnolia Plantation; Times for giving input into a new West Ashley plan; a big gift from Jersey Mike’s; a national award for a local lawyer; Charleston Stage’s new season; and National Library Week.

GOOD NEWS: Greeter’s cabin to become garden center at Magnolia

By Herb Frazier, special to Charleston Currents | For many, many years a cabin has stood unused near the ticket booth at Magnolia.

It has always been referred to as Tena Gilliard’s cabin. Tena Gilliard was a greeter at Magnolia in the early 1900s and she lived in the cabin.

CALENDAR, March 27+: Mad Hatter Tea Party is Saturday

Staff reports | Don’t be late for the Mad Hatter Tea Party at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens on Saturday, March 25, near the horticultural maze.

The four-hour event starts at 11 a.m. and is designed for children three to 12 years old. The maze area will be become a wonderland of entertainment including a giant chess set, flamingo croquet, face painting, photo booth, games, refreshments and more. Prizes will be given for the best costumes.

The rare two-volume Catesby set is kept under lock and key most of the year for preservation and security purposes. FOCUS: Magnolia cultivates heirloom plant symposium and sale

By Herb Frazier | An heirloom plant symposium at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens on March 11 will feature a line-up of horticulturalists, a Gullah chef and a beekeeper who will explain the importance of preserving plants, stories and recipes that have been passed through the generations.

During “What’s Old is New Again,” experts will explain the historical significance of heirloom plant varieties, the correlation between them and the cultures they preserve. Speakers will also discuss why pollinators play a key role in this preservation and how these efforts are fueling the heirloom renaissance.

PHOTOS: Turtle basks

With February being more balmy than usual, it wasn’t surprising for contributing photographer Michael Kaynard to find turtles lapping up the sun during a recent photo shoot at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. We’re probably in for a cold snap or two still, but with pollen bombs going off from area trees, the signs of spring are, ahem, in the air.
