NEWS BRIEFS: Police say lessons learned; coalition pushes back on report

Staff reports  |  Charleston police say an internal assessment of May 30-31 protests downtown show the agency has learned, but a coalition of activists is pushing back.

During the presentation of the final after-action report during Tuesday’s Public Safety Committee meeting, Chief Luther Reynolds said the report was made to include the perspectives of officers, community leaders, business owners, residents, protesters and arrested criminal offenders.

FOCUS: Neighbors chip in to buy pizza for police, firefighters

Staff reports  |  Residents of the Wappoo Shores neighborhood in West Ashley collected more than $650 in the last two weeks to feed police, firefighters and first responders as a way of thanking them for their service.

Fueled by an additional in-kind donation by D’Allesandro’s Pizza in downtown Charleston, the neighbors bought 30 of the company’s pies for officers on Friday afternoon. They plan to deliver as many to West Ashley firefighters next week.

Reynolds eats a slice of D’Allesandro’s pizza — at a safe social distance from anyone else!

“We’re so grateful for the support,” said Charleston Police Chief Luther Reynolds, who jokes how pizza, or “Vitamin P,” is his favorite food. “This is yet another example of showing how much the community cares for us.”

BRACK: Why are there 1,800 untested rape kits in South Carolina?

BRACK: Why are there 1,800 untested rape kits in South Carolina?

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |   There’s a backlog of untested rape kits in South Carolina because there’s more evidence coming in than authorized labs have the capacity to process.

One estimate is there are 1,800 evidence parcels that are waiting to be processed before cases can move forward. As of Dec. 31, the State Law Enforcement Division’s forensics lab had 1,333 untested rape kits waiting for processing, according to spokesman Tommy Crosby.  Another 148 are being processed now.
