GOOD NEWS: Chamber, Be a Mentor are partnering to help future leaders

Staff reports | Charleston Young Professionals, a division of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, is partnering with Be A Mentor, a nonprofit organization headquartered in North Charleston, to encourage young professionals’ involvement in the development of our region’s future leaders.

GOOD NEWS: Charleston to host 14th annual First Day Festival

The City of Charleston will host the 14th Annual First Day Festival from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 14 at Liberty Square at the S.C. Aquarium and the Charleston Maritime Center. The First Day Festival is a celebration of education and provides children and families with information on educational services in the community, as well as a fun day together. Also: Library back to school celebration and Magnolia Plantation’s dog adoptions.

GOOD NEWS: Library offers new download service for free

Hundreds of thousands of eBooks, audio books, songs and movies are now available for local residents to download or stream free – if they have a Charleston County Public Library card. In addition to the free digital services already offered through CCPL’s website, the library has added new downloadable and streaming materials from hoopla digital (note: both words are lowercase).

GOOD NEWS: Statue to be erected of Hollings

Staff reports | Our sister publication, Statehouse Report, exclusively reported Friday that supporters and friends of retired U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings are planning to unveil a full-sized bronze statue in his honor in the spring. Davies picked to be library’s new executive director

Nicolle Davies, a nationally-recognized library leader who was named Library Journal magazine’s 2016 Librarian of the Year, will be Charleston County Public Library’s new executive director, the library’s Board of Trustees announced today.

“Charleston is blessed to have a library leader of Nicolle’s stature to steer our system in the transformational years ahead of us,” said Andy Brack, chair of the library’s Board of Trustees. “A world-class city attracts world-class talent. With energy, drive and vision, Nicolle will help guide our professional staff through exciting changes with new buildings and programs that will truly make our libraries become lifelong learning centers.”

The joyful sounds of the Imani Milele Children’s Choir from Uganda filled the air last week as officials renamed the St. Andrews Regional Library in West Ashley after the late librarian Cynthia Graham Hurd, who died in the Emanuel AME Church massacre last year. The event, held on what would have been Hurd’s birthday, brought tears to some, but the children’s choir’s sounds brought smiles and delight to those who attended.

Trident United Way announced last week it would make $2.1 million in grants over three years in 33 programs delivered by 22 nonprofits in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties in its three core areas: education, financial stability and health.
