FOCUS, Palm: Local business leaders need to step up now

By Fred Palm, contributing editor  |  The Lowcountry is a dysfunctional area because in many situations, the business community organizes “business councils” that serve as sounding boards and advocates for enlightened public policy for the common good to achieve a turnaround. Unfortunately, they’ve been mostly dormant and now is the time for our business leaders to step forward to contribute community service for the common good. Here is why.

The fiction that ‘growth is good’ and that ‘growth pays for itself’ is exposed in Summerville for the shams that they are.   All elected politicians know them to be big lies.  Only some have the courage to give voice to truth and the reality of numbers – and to come up with workable solutions.

BRACK: Seize the rudder to thwart ambivalence, apathy, neglect

BRACK: Seize the rudder to thwart ambivalence, apathy, neglect

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |  With the annual legislative session roaring to a close, there are a multitude of unresolved issues, as usual.

Most prominent is the state’s nuclear mess, a $9 billion fiasco stemming from a nuclear plant project that failed last year without generating a watt of power.  Currently, the state House and Senate are mired in working out differences in how to deal with this issue that has consumed hours and hours of legislative time.

FOCUS: Seven leadership lessons from Black Panther

FOCUS: Seven leadership lessons from Black Panther

By Anton Gunn, special to Statehouse Report | I don’t know about you, but I love the movies. I especially love Marvel Comics’ movies. If you haven’t heard by now, Marvel has released one of the most successful movies in the history of its movie franchise, Black Panther.

I saw Black Panther over the weekend (three times). There was so much to “marvel” about in this movie. The story, the action, the characters, the scenery and the leadership lessons were remarkable. Yes, the leadership lessons. I believe you can find leadership lessons in every experience, especially in the movies.

So even if you haven’t seen it, I want to offer a spoiler-free list of the top Seven Leadership Lessons I gained from the movie Black Panther.

BRACK: Tips for how elected officials can be better, more effective

BRACK: Tips for how elected officials can be better, more effective

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | It’s no surprise that politicians in our state have credibility problems thanks to distant and recent scandals that continue to tar the whole Statehouse. Confidence in government, to put it mildly, ain’t all that strong.

In the 1990s, several South Carolina legislators went to jail after a Statehouse sting. A generation later despite ethics reforms, corruption allegations led to resignations of a lieutenant governor and powerful House speaker. And then December brought a 30-count corruption indictment for one House member and a felony domestic assault charge against another.
