GOOD NEWS: The Pearl to open March 13 in West Ashley

Staff reports | The grand opening of the Pearlstine Theatre, Charleston Stage’s 130-seat space in West Ashley that will be known as “The Pearl,” is set for March 18.

A special grand opening performance will feature music by Charleston Mayor and jazz pianist John Tecklenburg as well as tunes from the Hungry Monks and the Plantation Singers. There will be offerings by Charleston Stage’s resident professional acting company and members of Charleston Stage’s 8th and 9th Grade Performance Troupe featuring clarinet player Julie Mathias.

GOOD NEWS: Ketner to get inaugural Homeless to Hope Award

Staff reports | Local businesswoman and philanthropist Linda Ketner will be presented with the inaugural Homeless to Hope Award at March 11 Homeless to Hope Benefit Concert. Sponsored by the Mayors’ Commission on Homelessness and Affordable Housing, the concert will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Gaillard Center Performance Hall.

The Mayors’ Commission on Homelessness and Affordable Housing (MCHAH), led by Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey, Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie and Summerville Mayor Wiley Johnson, established the award to recognize community members’ enduring contributions to alleviating homelessness.

GOOD NEWS: New mystery has S.C. political connection from 200 years ago

Staff reports | A new mystery novel with political and historical connections to Hamiltonian days gone by will be available Nov. 1 when Charleston author Andra Watkins’ “Hard to Die” hits national bookstores.

Watkins, who is a New York Times bestselling author for a book chronicling her walk of the Natchez Trace, will offer remarks on the new novel at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the main library on Calhoun Street in Charleston. She’ll make local history come alive by answering questions like: Where did George Washington have a drink? Did Aaron Burr visit a favorite haunt?
