You’ll start seeing a new license plate for cars in South Carolina early next year as a new design is phased in. The plate features a white background with an iconic palmetto tree and crescent design in the center that is a reverse of the state flag. (Some say it’s a crescent moon; others say it’s a gorget.)
Staff reports | The Riley Institute at Furman University in January will honor the late state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, the pastor slain in June with eight worshippers in Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, with the David H. Wilkins Award for Excellence in Legislative Leadership, the Institute has announced.
Also to be recognized with the Wilkins Award for Excellence in Civic Leadership are S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley and outgoing Charleston Mayor Joe Riley, both of whom will speak at the event and discuss their collaboration during the crisis involving the deaths the Emanuel Nine.

The inclusive, diverse crowd vibrated with palpable and emotional electricity as energized supporters grooved to loud music, laughed, hugged and waited for a victory speech. Then Tecklenburg delivered the kind of forward-looking talk you’ve heard for weeks. He discussed boosting Charleston’s quality of life and working together to make things better.
Porter Gaud graduate Chris Cooper’s Washington company Convergence Targeted Communications designed this clever oversized postcard that landed in Charleston mailboxes in the waning days of the testy runoff mayoral campaign between John Tecklenburg and Leon Stavrinakis. It’s one of the cleverest political mailers we’ve seen in years because of how it mixes humor and history to remind voters to get to the polls Tuesday to vote for Tecklenburg, the candidate we endorsed.
