BRACK: New statue of Hollings captures his spirit, leadership, energy

BRACK: New statue of Hollings captures his spirit, leadership, energy

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | Sculptor Rick Weaver captured the body language of Fritz Hollings just right in a new statue unveiled Monday as former colleagues heaped praises on the retired senator, now 95.

Three things stand out in the bronze figure – the warm, but determined, look on Hollings’ face; how his left hand is grasping a rolled-up document; and, most notably, an outstretched right hand, a familiar gesture to many of the senator’s former staffers and friends.

“I asked him what he felt was the quality he possessed that allowed him to succeed in his work,” Charlottesville, Va., sculptor Weaver said in the ceremony program. “He said very quickly, ‘My ability to make friends.’ So in subtle ways, I tried to show that – his hand gesture, him turning to face someone. I wanted to convey how actively engaged he was all his life.”

GOOD NEWS: City launches online platform for boards, commissions

Staff reports | With more than 40 boards and commissions, the city of Charleston has long encouraged independent citizen oversight and participation in local government—at least in theory, according to a press release last week.

But with the debut of Boards+, a new city website that allows citizens to view the members, duties and actions of city boards, committees and commissions and to apply for open positions as they become available, that theory is now becoming a reality for residents throughout the Charleston area.

GOOD NEWS: A big win for our coast

Staff reports | Coastal elected and environmental leaders are tickled pink that the Obama Administration last week reversed itself on the potential for offshore gas and oil development in the Atlantic Ocean.

The plan was opposed by more than two dozen coastal South Carolina communities, including Charleston and Beaufort. Both of the towns’ mayors met with White House officials on March 14, the day before the reversal was announced.

MORRIS: Coming together is Teck’s theme, Charleston’s desire

PALMETTO POEM: “Reimagining History”

Though Charleston is a shrine to the past,
where every alleyway and weather-worn road
tells the story of a city resurrected;
time is never standing still.
Running beneath the surface
are fault lines of our own making,
reshaping memory brick by brick.

FOCUS: Meet Teck’s team

Staff reports | With a new mayor comes new staff members who will guide the city. We thought you’d want to learn more about five new senior staff members who will work for Mayor John Tecklenburg to manage the city of Charleston.

Planner Josh Martin and longtime arts executive Rick Jerue will serve as top advisers for Tecklenburg, who reportedly will delegate more projects to them to allow him to keep on top of the big picture and major projects. Martin and Jerue essentially fill roles formerly held in the administration of former Mayor Joe Riley by Lawrence Thompson, who will work through spring in the transition, and Mary Ann Sullivan, who has retired. Rounding out Tecklenburg’s senior team are Jack O’Toole, Mike Whack and Robin Griffith.

FOCUS: What Mayor John Tecklenburg said today

“First, I want to personally thank the citizens of Charleston for this incredible opportunity to serve. It’s a great honor to become Mayor of my hometown — and at the same time humbling and exciting.

“Never before in our city’s history has a mayor taken office at a moment so rich with the promise of a better, brighter future for all our citizens – we must only have the will, and the wisdom, to work together to claim that promise.

Everywhere we look — from West Ashley to James and Johns Islands, from Daniel Island to the Peninsula — we see that promise …
