GOOD NEWS: New museum’s groundbreaking to be Oct. 25

Staff reports | The International African American Museum (IAAM) will have a public groundbreaking ceremony 10 a.m. Oct. 25 with a theme of “Illuminating the African American Journey.”

“For almost 20 years, more than 1,000 individuals, corporations and foundations have been working to bring the museum into fruition,” said former Charleston Mayor Joe Riley in a press release. “The groundbreaking ceremony will give us an opportunity to express our deepest appreciation to the donors, volunteers and supporters who have worked so hard to get us to this milestone.”

GOOD NEWS: Magnolia to host 7th annual History Fair on July 6

Staff reports | Explore Lowcountry South Carolina history and meet the people who promote and preserve it on Saturday during the seventh annual History Fair at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., amateur and serious historians and children who want to touch the past can mingle with representatives of about 30 well-known organizations in the Charleston area.

GOOD NEWS: The Pearl to open March 13 in West Ashley

Staff reports | The grand opening of the Pearlstine Theatre, Charleston Stage’s 130-seat space in West Ashley that will be known as “The Pearl,” is set for March 18.

A special grand opening performance will feature music by Charleston Mayor and jazz pianist John Tecklenburg as well as tunes from the Hungry Monks and the Plantation Singers. There will be offerings by Charleston Stage’s resident professional acting company and members of Charleston Stage’s 8th and 9th Grade Performance Troupe featuring clarinet player Julie Mathias.

GOOD NEWS: S.C.’s Twiggs wins Gibbes’ 1858 Prize

Staff reports | Orangeburg artist and arts educator Leo Twiggs has won the $10,000 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art, according to the Gibbes Museum of Art and its 1858 Society. A formal announcement reportedly will be made today.

A painter born in 1934 in St. Stephen, S.C., who works with wax and batik, Twiggs is the first South Carolinian to win the prize, awarded since 2008.

GOOD NEWS: Park for two hours for free in Charleston Nov. 24-Jan. 1

Staff reports | The city and county of Charleston are offering two free hours of parking at participating garages during the holiday season, starting on Thanksgiving and ending on New Year’s Day.

Click the link above to find out how to print the voucher. (Hard copies of the voucher will be a part of local water bills.)

Garages participating in the “holiday magic” present to area shoppers include the those at the visitor’s center, 34 St. Philip St., Concord-Cumberland, East Bay-Prioleau. According to the flyer, “additional automated garages are participating,” but you won’t be able to see a list of them until later this week at this link.

GOOD NEWS: Officials break ground for new James Island library

Staff reports | A new 20,000 square foot library on James Island should open by the end of 2018, according to library and county officials who kicked off construction of the facility at a Friday groundbreaking.

In related news, county officials last week gave the O.K. to designers and builders to move forward with a new library to replace the Cooper River Memorial Library in North Charleston.
