MY TURN: How to beat the Charleston heat

MY TURN: How to beat the Charleston heat

By Mike Robertson, College of Charleston  | There’s hot, and then there’s Charleston hot – the kind of heavy, suffocating hot that has residents wondering why they live here and visitors knowing why they don’t. Yep, Charleston knows hot. It also knows what it’s like when you add a nice thick layer of humidity to that hot. In the South, we call it summer. And, while most of us have adapted to the summer heat, even Southerners are susceptible to the dangerous and even life-threatening effects that extreme heat can have on our bodies.

BRACK: A hotter South Carolina has some steamy policy impacts

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |  Regardless of whether you are a climate change denier or someone who believes that science shows the globe is warming, there’s one thing we can all agree on:  It’s been hot.  Real hot.

Summer’s annual blast furnace of high heat and humidity came earlier than expected this year as the middle of the country dealt with lots of flooding and a whole bunch of freaky tornadoes.

BRACK:  Don’t leave your furry friends in hot cars

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |  The passenger window was cracked about two inches on a hazy Charleston morning.  It wasn’t too hot yet, but the mercury was already 80 degrees.

A little white lap dog panted as it sat on the front seat of the late-model Volvo SUV with Virginia plates.  Where was the owner, I wondered.  Why is the dog in the car?

FOCUS: The dilemma over carriage horses and the need for reform

By Joe Elmore, Charleston Animal Society | For over 142 years, Charleston Animal Society’s mission of preventing cruelty to animals has not changed. The organization was established by leading Charlestonians to be the protective voice for equines and other animals.

Today in downtown Charleston where the Animal Society was established as the first animal organization in South Carolina and one of the oldest in the nation, equines do not fare better due to an outdated and ineffective system of regulations governing what is commonly known as the carriage horse industry.

FOCUS: Heat is summer’s number one danger for pets

FOCUS: Heat is summer’s number one danger for pets

By Dan Krosse, guest contributor | As the temperatures heat up, so do the risks of injuries for your pets. Dr. Lucy Fuller, DVM, of Charleston Animal Society says that the risk of heat stroke is the number one issue that pet owners need to be aware of.

“It takes less than five minutes for a car to get well over 100 degrees,” she warns. “There is no safe amount of time for a pet to be left in the car.”

Remember that dogs can’t sweat and the only way they can release heat is by panting. Health experts warn that just being outside can cause danger in the summer months.

LETTER: Horses pull heavy loads in searing heat

LETTER: Horses pull heavy loads in searing heat

Polls may be only a snapshot (“Good News; Community raises concerns about carriage horses”). 00_icon_feedbackThe reality of equines being forced to pull heavy loads (17 Adult passengers by ONE horse) for eight hours a day in searing heat and humidity day after day is a reality that citizen/taxpayers living and working in Charleston understand. It’s common sense.
