Staff reports | As hurricane season moves towards its peak season and experts say more hurricanes are expected, the American Red Cross is seeking volunteers to help support shelters as well as donors to give blood. According to the National Hurricane Center, there’s a 60 percent chance of a tropical wave off the African coast developing into a tropical depression that may influence weather here.
By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | The enormity of anti-science fervor in the Republican-controlled South Carolina legislature that will keep students, most unvaccinated, from wearing masks is mind-blowingly ignorant.
As a result, too many children will get or spread coronavirus — now worse than last year at this time because of a new, more contagious strain — and more will suffer. Children and more adults may die, thanks to the lame-brained GOP General Assembly’s lockstep denial of science.
Staff reports | Black Ink: A Charleston African American Book Festival will feature author Kwame Mbalia as keynote speaker during the three-day online event that amplifies voices of black authors.

Mbalia told the Charleston City Paper he is honored to be involved in the festival, where his keynote speech will be titled, “Be a Sapper, Not a Gatekeeper.”
Unfortunately, our state’s leader, Gov. Henry McMaster, has taken a course in denial about the threats from coronavirus from his crony, President Trump. The GOP-run legislature is no better at protecting life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Instead, it twiddles as more people die and get the virus.
“We really don’t have any leadership,” said state Sen. Brad Hutto, an Orangeburg Democrat who is the new Senate minority leader. “The governor is in line with Trump. There’s no leadership at DHEC [the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control] and the legislature has abandoned the field.

Staff reports | The Medical University of South Carolina is offering an online tool that helps make sense of data related to the coronavirus pandemic in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.
The MUSC COVID-19 Epidemiology Intelligence Project provides leading indicators in a color-coded dashboard that can help people make informed decisions. Indicators in the “green” are safe, while those that are yellow and red show more work needs to be done.
