FOCUS: Counting on Nature promotes better understanding

Staff reports  |  Look around and you might find something new, just as local resident Tess Moody did three years ago.

In June 2018, Moody, a part-time staff member at the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission (CCPRC), found a new species of millipede at Caw Caw Interpretive Center, according to the agency.  She took a photo of the arthropod and posted it to an online forum for entomologists for identification.

She then was contacted by Jackson Means of Virginia Tech, who believed it could be an unidentified species. They were unable to find the millipede specimen at Caw Caw again until June of 2020. This second discovery allowed the two to confirm that the millipede was indeed previously undescribed in scientific literature.

FOCUS: McLeod Plantation, Caw Caw park win international honor

NOV. 18, 2019  | Two historic Charleston County parks are now internationally-recognized “Sites of Conscience”  by a worldwide network of 230 sites in 55 countries.

According to a press release from the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission, Caw Caw Interpretive Center in Ravenel and McLeod Plantation Historic Site on James Island are now part of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience — places that confront the history of what happened at the site and lasting impacts.

“You have done great work already reimagining the historic plantation experience and we are eager to be a part of your continued journey,”  International Coalition of Sites of Conscience Executive Director Elizabeth Silkes wrote in a letter to the parks commission.

According to release, “Sites of Conscience ‘face all aspects of history and also activate the historical perspective with dynamic public dialogue on related issues we face today and what we can do about them.’

MYSTERY PHOTO: Interesting roofscape

MYSTERY PHOTO: Interesting roofscape

My, my, this certainly is an interesting roofscape with hints of, perhaps, Turkey and France.  But where is it specifically (more than just the town)?  Try to identify where or what it is in this community.  Send your guess to editor@charlestoncurrents.com. And don’t forget to include your name and the town in which you live.

Our previous Mystery Photo: Our May 6 mystery, “Swampy clue,” generated interesting guesses, such as Beidler Forest or Cypress Gardens.  Bud Ferillo of Columbia joked that the swamp was the Statehouse in Columbia.

Old cattails, Caw Caw Interpretive Center, Ravenel, S.C.

Photo: Winter beauty

Many people don’t think of the beauty of a coastal marsh in the summer, but you can find lots of neat stuff outside during a time of year when bugs are not a major factor. This shot highlights old cattails at Caw Caw Interpretive Center near Ravenel. Also good for this time of years — lots of migratory birds, including […]
