FEEDBACK: Retrofit for bike lane would be bad

FEEDBACK: Retrofit for bike lane would be bad

Alan Hopkins, James Island: “If we repeat it often enough, it must be true! In the case of the Legare Bridge retrofit, a bike path at the cost of a traffic lane adds an unhealthy increase in commuting time to those using the Maybank to Folly corridor as well as the entire Folly Rd corridor. “

FEEDBACK: Vote on the bike lane

FEEDBACK: Vote on the bike lane

Judy Carberry, Charleston: “Why not have the people vote on the bike lane in lieu of having the council decide everyone’s wishes? The entire time that lane was shut down, there were precious few people riding bikes, especially during the rush hour. I saw the picture of three bikes and how many cars? I would be interested to know how many days someone had to wait to even get a picture of the three riders. “

BRACK: On Sanford, unemployment, airport parking, bike lane and Trump

BRACK: On Sanford, unemployment, airport parking, bike lane and Trump

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | A bunch of headlines — some good, some not — scream out for some kind of commentary, so let’s dive right in.

Our congressman, Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford, offered a self-serving opinion piece/lecture of Aug. 15 in The New York Times that urged his party’s presidential standard bearer, Donald Trump, to release his federal income tax returns.

He’s right, particularly to suggest that Trump’s “obstinacy” in releasing returns would have dramatic impacts in down-ballot elections and in future elections because others wouldn’t feel they had to be as transparent as candidates in the past.

FEEDBACK: On bike lane, azaleas

FEEDBACK: On bike lane, azaleas

Judy Carberry: Unfortunately, what that video [of the Ashley River bike lane experiment] does not clearly illustrate is that the exit to Lockwood is down to one lane. Before this was in place, there were two lanes for exiting — those going to the hospitals and those of us going further downtown.

GOOD NEWS: Bike lane test is underway

GOOD NEWS: Bike lane test is underway

If you haven’t been to downtown Charleston lately from West Ashley, you’ll soon find out that the roadway looks a little different. Instead of four lanes of vehicles crossing the Ashley River into Charleston, there are now three. The outside lane has been partitioned into a walk/bike lane to test how traffic will react. Also: two winners, a scholarship, water parks and a new film.
