FOCUS: Primary voting opens 7 a.m. Tuesday

Staff reports  |  Voters who haven’t already cast absentee ballots to avoid the coronavirus and potentially long lines will head to the polls Tuesday for the state Democratic and Republican primaries.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close 12 hours later.  While it’s not clear how busy polls will be, poll managers have received public health training for the pandemic to protect people’s health, according to the state election commission.  Social distancing policies will be in place and managers are expected to clean common surfaces.

Voters are advised to bring photo identification.  Several voting locations also have changed in recent days in Charleston County.

BRACK: Do something to reduce frenzy at presidential debates

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |  Halfway through the nationally-aired South Carolina presidential debate on Feb. 25, the television got turned off.  Too much bickering. Too little substance. Too much crosstalk.

There’s got to be a better way for voters to get information than big spectacles where candidates have 75 seconds to answer direct questions and challengers can pipe in for only a few seconds.  More serious discussion is needed.

FOCUS: Political world to descend this week on South Carolina

Staff reports |  It will seem like you won’t be able to turn a corner this week in Charleston without bumping into a presidential candidate, a staffer, a reporter or a camera crew.

The political world — with reporters from as far away as Sydney, Australia — will descend upon the Palmetto State in search of the “what’s next” in the horse race of a presidential contest known as the Democratic presidential primary.

The week will start with town halls by CNN, followed by a Tuesday evening Democratic debate aired nationally from the Charleston Gaillard Center to Saturday’s first-in-the-South presidential primary. Republicans elected to not have a primary. But that won’t keep away GOP President Donald Trump, who will have a rally Friday in North Charleston in what some critics see as part political-stalking, part-voter intimidation and part-spurring of members of his party to interfere with the Saturday election.

BRACK: Welcome to South Carolina

BRACK: Welcome to South Carolina

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  | For the presidential candidates, staffers, reporters and hangers-on starting to descend like locusts into South Carolina for its national debate and the Feb. 29 presidential primary, remember what native son James L. Pettigru wrote just after the state seceded in December 1860:

“South Carolina is too small for a republic and too large for an insane asylum.”

In a lot of ways, that one sentence still rings true.

BRACK: Steyer’s barbecue visit showed his passion, pragmatism

BRACK: Steyer’s barbecue visit showed his passion, pragmatism

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher   |  It’s been two weeks since Tom Steyer came over for supper.

On a campaign swing through Charleston, the billionaire presidential candidate sat down with a few people to eat Rodney Scott’s awesome barbecue and ribs and have a beer. Well, he actually had one glass of wine. He is, after all, from California. I didn’t intend to write about this visit because I didn’t want it to seem like an ad for a guy running for the Democratic nomination.  (I still don’t know who I’ll vote for in the February primary; there is no GOP primary, so I won’t be voting in that one.)
