Morris: Report highlights good things about education

By Kyra Morris | Want to read something good about education in South Carolina and specifically Charleston? Several years ago, the greater community came together to create an organization whose purpose is to maximize resources and foster an environment of collective impact where young people of all socio-economic backgrounds can reach their fullest potential. New initiatives within schools from pre-school through post-secondary are in place to support youth development from cradle to career.

Brack: More civics education is a good thing

Brack: More civics education is a good thing

The James B. Edwards Civics Education Initiative calls for high school students to take a 100-question U.S. Citizenship Civics Test as part of an existing half-year course in government. The proposal doesn’t mandate passage of the test as a requirement for graduation (although it should), but students who get a passing score of 60 or better will receive an achievement certificate.

Sabine: PAW (parents are watching) social media

Enter the multifaceted, ever changing world of technology. We’ve come a long way since that first email was sent in 1971. Every imaginable tool of our new tech world fits nicely into the compact cell phone that our children now cradle in the palm of their hand. Are you really ready to hand them the world? Can your child handle this fully loaded Lamborghini before they’ve even earned their driver’s permit?

The coverage area of the library's proposed station.

Brack: Library may offer local radio station

The Charleston County Public Library is looking into offering a new radio station to provide local educational and cultural programming now missing from the Lowcountry airwaves.

In November, the library system, which got overwhelming support from voters in a recent $108 million bond referendum, received approval from the Federal Communications Commission for a construction permit for a low-power FM station based at the main library on Calhoun Street. If it becomes a reality, it would broadcast at 97.5 on the FM dial.

McQuage: When someone with dementia is hospitalized

McQuage: When someone with dementia is hospitalized

“When people with dementia has to go to the emergency room, their reactions to the event are often very similar to my daughter’s reactions. Even if people with dementia have been to a particular hospital or emergency room numerous times, each time they may experience it as if it were the first.”

South Carolina, the Squeaky Wheel State

Brack: S.C. is Squeaky Wheel State

If you haven’t yet learned, South Carolina’s culture places more emphasis in reacting to problems instead of planning to deal with issues before they become problems. That’s just the way we’ve rolled. We should be called the Squeaky Wheel State.

Gov. Nikki Haley gives the 2015 State of the State address, 2015.

Brack: Haley’s anti-union bullying out of order

“Folks, the only bully in the Statehouse chamber Wednesday night was Nikki Haley. Not a real contender in the 2016 presidential race, she must just have needed to create some kind of false bogeyman to feel warm and cuddly about herself.”

Morris: Learn about volatility now in the market

Morris: Learn about volatility now in the market

JAN. 26, 2015 | The DOW is at 18,000. Wait, the Dow is at 17,200. What now, it’s back close to 18,000. Look again and low 17,000s appear to be the target. We experienced this type of rollercoaster ride just about every week in January. It’s up. It’s down. In short time frames, there were seemingly big swings. What happened?
