PHOTOS: The faces of Cuba

Set aside political ideologies and international affairs. Cuba, at its heart, is defined by her people, a mélange of black, brown and white seemingly filled with a joie de vivre captured in quick smiles, infectious rumba and a welcoming spirit.

Here are several photos that show some of the faces of Cuba encountered during a nine-day August trip organized by Magnolia Plantation and Gardens.

PHOTO: Riding piggyback?

Hanahan photographer Chuck Boyd was driving in Raleigh for a Rolling Stones concert when he did a double take after he saw what looked like a small car riding piggyback on top of a van. “Moments later, I saw it really was a transport truck hauling a load of cars to a dealership,” he wrote. “I caught it at just the right angle to create a silly illusion.”

PHOTO: McLeod Oak

PHOTO: McLeod Oak

This grand 600-year-old oak is located at McLeod Plantation Historic Site, open since April and operated by the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission. The new 36-acre park, located near the Wappoo Cut bridge on James Island, is an important Gullah/Geechee heritage site that has been preserved. You can tour the plantation and compare the family home with those built for enslaved families. There’s lots to learn. More information can be found here. (Photo from CCPRC.)
