PHOTO: A dark and stormy afternoon

Beach weekends around this time of year seem to have a rolling theme — great morning weather followed by rolling, black thunderclouds in the afternoon as heat and steam build up to generate rain. Photo by Andy Brack.

PHOTO ESSAY: Views from Newfoundland

PHOTO ESSAY: Views from Newfoundland

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | Our family took a cool vacation — literally — last week to Newfoundland, where temperatures were downright chilly at times. During the early part of the week, weather was drizzly and cool, with day and night temperatures bouncing between 46 degrees and 55 degrees. As the week wore on, it got sunnier and bright with daytime temps reaching a comfortable 72 degrees.

We thought you’d enjoy these photos of the St. John’s area, which is marked by kind people, great food, good hikes and houses with more colors than on Rainbow Row. The city is slightly smaller than Charleston — 106,000 people — but has a long maritime history like that in the Holy City.

PHOTO: It’s a turtle tank (not a shark tank)

This sea turtle at the S.C. Aquarium is having a ball swimming in the big tank. Some fun facts according to the Aquarium: Sea turtles have small brains and are opportunistic feeders who eat just about anything. Loggerheads are the state reptile. Loggerheads, classified as threatened since 1978, have lived on earth for about 150 million years — before even the times of dinosaurs. Photo by Courtenay Brack.

PHOTO: Joyful sounds

PHOTO: Joyful sounds

The joyful sounds of the Imani Milele Children’s Choir from Uganda filled the air last week as officials renamed the St. Andrews Regional Library in West Ashley after the late librarian Cynthia Graham Hurd, who died in the Emanuel AME Church massacre last year. The event, held on what would have been Hurd’s birthday, brought tears to some, but the children’s choir’s sounds brought smiles and delight to those who attended.

PHOTO ESSAY: Mississippi Delta

PHOTO ESSAY: Mississippi Delta

A recent trip to the Mississippi Delta around Clarksdale, Miss., and neighboring Helena-West Helena, Ark., across the river offered an opportunity for some interesting pictures, such as the church with no name, above. It’s located in Quitman County about five miles east of Clarksdale. The church was nestled in a glen by a small river with a cemetery in a front side yard area. But the area seemed abandoned with no signs anywhere. Enjoy these photos below, all by publisher Andy Brack.
