PHOTO: Deep orange: Smoke on the water

Guess who the only folks to get any kind of benefit from all of the smoke that has blown into the area from mountain wildfires? Photographers. The particulates in the air have created deep reds and oranges that excite the lenses of professional and amateur photographers, as highlighted by this shot taken from the Pitt Street Bridge in Mount Pleasant by past contributor Leigh Sabine of Mount Pleasant. Thanks for sending the shot, Leigh!

PHOTO: Juxtaposition

This photo was just too good to pass up. Editor and publisher Andy Brack says he was walking along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., on Friday afternoon and ran into a rally of women for Hillary Clinton for President. A block away loomed the Old Post Office, which GOP candidate Donald Trump has turned into one of his signature hotels. He apparently has joked that he’ll be living along Pennsylvania Avenue one way or another, regardless of how the election goes Tuesday. At left, you can see the post office’s tower. At right, you can see one woman’s poster, “Love trumps hate.”

PHOTO: Good neighbors?

It’s a big deal to many when a movie crew comes here to film, as is the case with recent activity downtown with the Marlon Wayans movie, “Naked.” It’s new. It’s different.

But people’s lives have to go on, in spite of everything associated with movie crews, which cause streets to be blocked, traffic to be rerouted and local businesses reliant on tourism to see smaller numbers of people in shops. Contributing photographer Michael Kaynard recently found parking spaces and lots full with film trucks and other vehicle.

This year’s annual gala for the Alliance for Full Acceptance on Saturday night at Memminger Auditorium offered a special twist for the 300 or so folks who gathered to raise money for the nonprofit: Entertainment by the Citadel Cadet Chorale. Not only did the cadets sing a medley of songs from “Jersey Boys” and tunes like “Little Deuce Coupe,” but the college surprised many by sponsoring a table at the event. Photo by Andy Brack.
