GOOD NEWS: Chamber offers legislative priorities

Staff reports | The 2018 legislative agenda for the Charleston Metro Chamber includes 15 priorities split between priority issues and competitiveness issues.

Anticipating a session focused on our state’s energy and state pension issues, the Chamber restructured this year’s state agenda into priority issues and competitiveness issues.

The agenda features 11 priority issues that the Chamber’s advocacy team will actively work to pass this year. There are an additional four competitiveness issues which may take longer to accomplish, but are priorities that are vitally important to the business community.

FOCUS: First the snow, now the thaw

Staff reports | With most people across the Lowcountry homebound because of the Great Charleston Snow of 2018, we solicited photos via Facebook from people around the area and were flabbergasted to receive more than 60 photos from 40 people.

GOOD NEWS: Johns Island Farmers Market to launch fifth year Saturday

Staff reports | The Johns Island Farmers Market will launch its fifth year 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, a delay of a week due to the snow and ice.

The market, which will be open until 2 p.m., is held at Charleston Collegiate School, 2024 Academy Drive, which can be accessed from River or Bohicket roads. The market has more than 60 new and returning vendors and farmers. More info.

FOCUS: Lowcountry Local First makes big differences in 10th year

It was a year full of gratitude, and time spent listening to ensure that your input and priorities guide our work in the decade to come. We’re not slowing down!

1. We celebrated our 10 year anniversary with a community-wide art installation known as “Love a Local,” a proclamationby the Mayor of the City of Charleston, and by honoring 10 Local Luminaries who’ve supported the local business community in major ways.

GOOD NEWS: Exhibit of Cuba photographs on display at main library

Staff reports | “Cuba, 2015” is a series of large digital photographs now on display at the Saul Alexander Gallery at the main branch of the Charleston County Public Library. The photos showcase glimpses of Cuba taken during an August 2015 trip by a group organized by Magnolia Plantations and Gardens.

The photographs by Charleston Currents editor and publisher Andy Brack first were published in this weekly journal.

“While you get something of a feel of life in Cuba in the online presentations of the photos from 2015, the large-scale, framed format offered in the exhibition gives a different feel – a depth that doesn’t come out on the computer screen,” Brack said. “I encourage you to stop by the library, see the photos and provide your reactions in a comment book in the gallery.”

The exhibition will run through the end of January.

FOCUS: The 12 Days of January: Charleston Restaurant Week returns

Staff reports | For 12 days in January – from Jan. 10 to Jan 21 – Charleston diners will be able to enjoy special food and drinks from renowned chefs at dozens of local eateries. It will be the latest installment of Charleston Restaurant Week, the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association, Inc. announced.

“What better way to kick off 2018 than with Charleston Restaurant Week?” said Greater Charleston Restaurant Association President Randall Goldman. “It’s the perfect time of year for both locals and visitors to explore Charleston’s ever-evolving culinary scene and we are so excited to be offering new restaurants and new menus for diners to experience in January.”

More than 100 restaurants participated in Charleston Restaurant Week in September . Newcomers joining the roster this January include Grace & Grit, Ink N Ivy and Pearlz Oyster Bar.

GOOD NEWS: West Ashley commission endorses new master plan

Staff reports | The most comprehensive renewal and revitalization effort in Charleston’s history received unanimous approval last week when the West Ashley Revitalization Commission endorsed implementation of a master plan.

The draft 333-0age report by Dover Kohl, a planning consultant hired by Charleston City Council earlier this year, now will go to the city’s planning commission for its consideration. City Council then will have a review.

“Plan West Ashley will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the area’s economic growth and the revitalization of its streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces,” Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg said in a news release last week. “Last night’s endorsement is a significant step forward as we continue working to enhance the quality of life for all of West Ashley’s residents.”

FOCUS: Dart Library celebrates 90th anniversary with new plaque

Staff reports | More than 60 people gathered Saturday to unveil a new historical marker to commemorate the formation of the Dart Hall Library 90 years ago in the northern part of Charleston. Today, the library is located on upper King Street in a building constructed in the late 1960s.

Onlookers clapped as Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg and two students unveiled the marker, which was sponsored by the Charleston County Public Library. The anniversary event also featured special presentations including unveiling of a portrait of the first librarian, a poetry reading by artist Fouche Sheppard and an excerpt of a documentary showcasing the evolution of Dart Hall Library and the Dart Library of today.

GOOD NEWS: Lowcountry students win mobile app competition

Staff reports | The Charleston Defense Contractors Association (CDCA), a non-profit advocacy group for the defense industry in the Southeast, on Friday announced student winners of the 7th Annual Student Mobile App Competition’

The organization annually holds a mobile app contest for students from middle school through graduate school to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and careers. The contest allows students to develop creative unique applications that ae able to run on either iOS phone or Android platforms to solve a challenge. They are judged by sponsors and attendees at the event. Winners share STEM-related contest awards of $10,000 in prizes, scholarships and future jobs.

FOCUS: Magazine names RiverDogs as top Class A baseball operation

Staff reports | After a record-setting season at the turnstiles and a promotional calendar that continued to turn heads, the Charleston RiverDogs have been honored as the Class-A recipient of the Bob Freitas Award, which recognizes the top overall operation at each level of the minor leagues by Baseball America magazine.

“The Freitas Award is one of the most sought-after honors in all of minor league baseball (MiLB), recognizing an organization’s overall accomplishments and commitment to their community,” said. said Jeff Goldklang, president of the Goldklang Group which owns the team. “Ownership takes tremendous pride in the first-rate operation that Dave [Echols] and his staff have built, establishing the RiverDogs as cutting-edge leaders in one of the country’s greatest markets. We’re honored and humbled to receive this recognition from Baseball America.”
