New county park is open for business

The new 745-acre Laurel Hill County Park that opened last month offers more places in East Cooper for county residents to run, walk and bike. Laurel Hill County Park is located between U.S. Highway 17 and S.C. Highway 41 in Mount Pleasant, but is accessible to the public from its trail head, located at the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department’s Park West Recreation Complex.

45 years ago: Charleston hospital workers’ strike

By George Hopkins | In Charleston in 1969, issues of race, class, and gender coalesced in a strike of more than 400 African American hospital workers, mostly female, against the all-white administrations of the Medical College Hospital (MCH) and Charleston County Hospital (CCH). The strike against MCH lasted 100 days during spring and summer; the one at CCH went on for an additional three weeks.

Ruff: Charleston County protects more greenspace in 2014

During 2014, the Charleston County Greenbelt Program helped facilitate the protection of 200 acres of rural landscapes through the purchase of conservation easements and the purchase of 250 acres that will be open to the public for recreation, farming and desired water-related activities. The program made strides toward meeting the public’s wishes through the approval of 16 projects totaling $6.5 million.
