GOOD NEWS: World-renowned artist paints vibrant mural at Dart Library

Artist and author Nick Kuszyk, also known as “R. Robots,” painted a colorful mural on an exterior wall of the John L. Dart Branch Library last week to honor Cynthia Graham Hurd, a 31-year employee of Charleston County Public Library and one of nine victims shot last year at Emanuel AME Church.

GOOD NEWS: Law students win 5th straight national moot court title

For a law school, winning a national moot court title is an educational equivalent of winning an NCAA basketball title. After a weekend competition in Florida, a team from the Charleston School of Law has won its fifth — yes fifth! — national tax moot court championship in a row. Also in good news: Magnolia poetry contest, Business of Barbecue, and Homeless to Hope Fund.

GOOD NEWS: Gardens yield a ton of produce

The Charleston Parks Conservancy’s Magnolia Community Garden, Elliotborough Community Garden and Medway Community Garden generated 2,039 pounds of produce in 2015 for donation to local food pantries, such as Lowcountry Food Bank, One80 Place and James Island Outreach.

Three nationally-known speakers are scheduled to present in a new Race and Social justice Initiative 2016 Event Series at the College of Charleston.

Speakers include education activist Marion Wright Edelman, social justice advocate Bryan Stevenson and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates. The program series will feature several nationally known thought leaders discussing issues surrounding race and social justice in the Charleston area and throughout the nation.

Staff reports | Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will deliver a keynote address 3 p.m. Sunday during the 44th annual Martin Luther King Tri-County Ecumenical Service, which will be at Morris Street Baptist Church, 25 Morris Street, in Charleston. It’s one of several events scheduled through Jan. 19 in South Carolina’s largest annual tribute to King, an event coordinated by the YWCA of Charleston. GOOD NEWS: City offers new business license renewal system

Starting Jan. 5, the City of Charleston will allow business owners to renew licenses online through a new Customer Access Portal at http://charleston-sc.gov/cap.

The new online business license renewal system is a password-protected, secure system that can be accessed by businesses that receive a business license renewal notice in the mail.
