GOOD NEWS: Design presented tonight for new St. Paul’s library

Staff reports | The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) will host a community meeting 7 p.m. June 12 to show updated designs for the new St. Paul’s Branch library. The meeting will be in the cafeteria of the E.B. Ellington Elementary School, 55444 Old Jacksonboro Road, Ravenel.

GOOD NEWS: Airport experiences 6.2 percent passenger growth

Staff reports | Charleston International Airport had 7 percent more people heading to one of 18 non-stop destinations in the first four months of the year, compared to last year in what is a traditionally slower traveling season. In the same period, 5.6 percent more people flew into the airport.

GOOD NEWS: Summer reading programs start Thursday at local libraries

Staff reports | Charleston County Public Library this week will kick off its 2017 Summer Reading Programs, which run from June 1 through July 31 and feature hundreds of free events and fun prizes for participants of all ages.

GOOD NEWS: Mayor, group to announce freedom school for literacy today

Staff reports | Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg and fellow members of the Charleston Freedom School Advisory Committee will hold a press conference today announcing the successful fundraising campaign and latest plans for a Charleston Freedom School, a six-week literacy program this summer for 50 at-risk peninsula students.

GOOD NEWS: Congratulations to area graduates

Staff reports | Graduates of area colleges tossed their hats into the air over the weekend as they celebrated hard work hitting the books. Pictured above is Sarah Anne Dumont, one of 657 graduates of Charleston Southern University. That was the school’s largest graduation since its founding in 1964.

GOOD NEWS: Wentworth collaborates in new national book of poetry

Staff reports | Charleston Currents contributing editor and South Carolina Poet Laureate Marjory Wentworth’s work is getting attention in a new national book that targets middle-school children to open their eyes to the joys of poetry. Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets is a collection of original poems by Newbery Medal–winning author and poet Kwame Alexander, along with poems by teacher-poet Chris Colderley and Wentworth.

GOOD NEWS: Gibbes announces new series of coming exhibitions

Staff reports | The Gibbes Museum of Art has announced seven special exhibitions that will appear in its third floor galleries between May 2017 and September 2018. The shows include a broad look at perspectives of Charleston by various artists, the work of 18th century artist and explorer Mark Catesby, Pan-American modernism and American folk art.

GOOD NEWS: SEWE to host federal junior duck stamp judging on April 21

Staff reports | Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) is hosting the 2017-2018 Federal Junior Duck Stamp judging in Charleston. The public is invited to attend the judging at Charleston Music Hall on Friday, April 21. This is the 25th year for the Junior Duck Stamp program and the first time the federal judging has been held in Charleston.

GOOD NEWS: Veterans get hunger relief help, more

Staff reports | Soldiers’ Angels Hunger Relief Program on Friday hosted a Veteran Mobile Food Distribution in the Hagood Stadium parking lot of The Citadel to help provide food assistance to more than 200 low-income, at-risk and homeless veterans from the Charleston-Area. The distribution was conducted in partnership with The Citadel and the Lowcountry Food Bank. Also in this section is Good News about an Easter Egg Hunt at Magnolia Plantation; Times for giving input into a new West Ashley plan; a big gift from Jersey Mike’s; a national award for a local lawyer; Charleston Stage’s new season; and National Library Week.
