GOOD NEWS: Frontier Airlines adds flights to Austin, Trenton

Staff reports | Low-fare carrier Frontier Airlines last week announced it will begin the only nonstop flights to Austin, Texas, and Trenton, N.J. in April. This announcement comes before the carrier even begins service at Charleston International Airport on Feb. 20 with previously announced nonstop flights to Denver and Philadelphia. Flights to Chicago start in May.

“Even though we have yet to start service, the Charleston community has already embraced our unique brand of ‘Low Fares, Done Right,’” said Scott Fisher, senior director of ancillary revenue and loyalty for Frontier Airlines. “We are committed to making flying affordable for everyone and to be adding new service here before our first flights have even departed speaks to the early support of the community and our partners here at the Charleston airport. With these two new flights, we will now offer low-cost, nonstop flights to five great destinations.”

GOOD NEWS: Series to look at healing from cultural trauma

Staff reports | The College of Charleston is offering a semester-long series to give voice to sociological trauma and the ways in which societies, countries and cultures have worked to heal from conflicts born out of issues such as systemic racism, slavery, genocide and political oppression.

According to a news release, the loosely unified series, titled “When the War Is Over: Memory, Division, and Healing,” brings together a collection of public lectures and forums that address historical trauma and the ways in which sites that have experienced such trauma have moved, or might move toward building a sustainable, peaceful community. From slavery and segregation in the United States to the Holocaust and the impact of the native Brazilian peoples upon the arrival of the Portuguese in the 17th century, the series explores the complexities of how groups move on from a collective feeling of trauma.

GOOD NEWS: Here’s how you can learn about joining a school board

Staff reports | You can learn about what it takes to become a school board candidate or advocate at a special two-hour nonpartisan workshop that will be offered 10 a.m. Feb. 24 by the League of Women Voters.

“The League of Women Voters is deeply concerned about public education and all of our children who are served by public schools in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties,” According to a press release. “Whatever other educational opportunities there may be, the vast majority of our children depend on public schools. Their education is critical to our democracy and our country’s future. Our public schools need dedicated advocates and school board candidates.”

In the tri-county area, more than 113,000 students count on public schools, the league said. “These students are our next generation of teachers, doctors and first responders. They are our future and they require the best we can offer. School board members are critical decision makers in ensuring that all our children can access an excellent education. In 2018, approximately half of the seats on school boards for the four Tri-County districts will be on the ballot.”

GOOD NEWS: Chamber offers legislative priorities

Staff reports | The 2018 legislative agenda for the Charleston Metro Chamber includes 15 priorities split between priority issues and competitiveness issues.

Anticipating a session focused on our state’s energy and state pension issues, the Chamber restructured this year’s state agenda into priority issues and competitiveness issues.

The agenda features 11 priority issues that the Chamber’s advocacy team will actively work to pass this year. There are an additional four competitiveness issues which may take longer to accomplish, but are priorities that are vitally important to the business community.

GOOD NEWS: Johns Island Farmers Market to launch fifth year Saturday

Staff reports | The Johns Island Farmers Market will launch its fifth year 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, a delay of a week due to the snow and ice.

The market, which will be open until 2 p.m., is held at Charleston Collegiate School, 2024 Academy Drive, which can be accessed from River or Bohicket roads. The market has more than 60 new and returning vendors and farmers. More info.

GOOD NEWS: Exhibit of Cuba photographs on display at main library

Staff reports | “Cuba, 2015” is a series of large digital photographs now on display at the Saul Alexander Gallery at the main branch of the Charleston County Public Library. The photos showcase glimpses of Cuba taken during an August 2015 trip by a group organized by Magnolia Plantations and Gardens.

The photographs by Charleston Currents editor and publisher Andy Brack first were published in this weekly journal.

“While you get something of a feel of life in Cuba in the online presentations of the photos from 2015, the large-scale, framed format offered in the exhibition gives a different feel – a depth that doesn’t come out on the computer screen,” Brack said. “I encourage you to stop by the library, see the photos and provide your reactions in a comment book in the gallery.”

The exhibition will run through the end of January.

GOOD NEWS: West Ashley commission endorses new master plan

Staff reports | The most comprehensive renewal and revitalization effort in Charleston’s history received unanimous approval last week when the West Ashley Revitalization Commission endorsed implementation of a master plan.

The draft 333-0age report by Dover Kohl, a planning consultant hired by Charleston City Council earlier this year, now will go to the city’s planning commission for its consideration. City Council then will have a review.

“Plan West Ashley will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the area’s economic growth and the revitalization of its streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces,” Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg said in a news release last week. “Last night’s endorsement is a significant step forward as we continue working to enhance the quality of life for all of West Ashley’s residents.”

GOOD NEWS: Lowcountry students win mobile app competition

Staff reports | The Charleston Defense Contractors Association (CDCA), a non-profit advocacy group for the defense industry in the Southeast, on Friday announced student winners of the 7th Annual Student Mobile App Competition’

The organization annually holds a mobile app contest for students from middle school through graduate school to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and careers. The contest allows students to develop creative unique applications that ae able to run on either iOS phone or Android platforms to solve a challenge. They are judged by sponsors and attendees at the event. Winners share STEM-related contest awards of $10,000 in prizes, scholarships and future jobs.

GOOD NEWS: New bus shelter unveiled at airport

Staff reports | Charleston International Airport has installed a state-of-the-art bus shelter to accommodate an increasing number of passengers and airport workers riding Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) vehicles to and from the airport.

“With passenger numbers booming at Charleston International Airport, we couldn’t be happier that the Aviation Authority has stepped up to partner in such a big way,” said CARTA board chairman Mike Seekings, who also is a Charleston city council member. “As more visitors than ever come to the Charleston area, we have to mitigate traffic impacts throughout the region, and a $3.50 direct connection from the airport to downtown is one way to do just that.”
