CALENDAR, Jan. 16+: On breaking barriers, restaurants, comedy and jazz

Staff reports | Former S.C. Rep. Lucille Whipper of Mount Pleasant and Charleston business leader Linda Ketner, two recent recipients of Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Charleston NAACP, will share their experiences breaking barriers in South Carolina at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church in a forum that starts 6 p.m. Jan. 23. The talk will be moderated by Patricia Williams Lessane, a cultural anthropologist and the executive director of the Avery Research Center at the College of Charleston. CALENDAR, Jan. 8+: Restaurant week, author talk, music, more

Cuba photo exhibit: Through Jan. 31/ Charleston County Public Library, Calhoun St., Charleston. Charleston Currents’ editor and publisher Andy Brack offers photographic insights into Cuba from a 2015 visit to the country. An exhibition is on display in the Saul Alexander Gallery. Free.

Restaurant Week: Jan. 10-21 in Charleston area restaurants. Charleston diners will be able to enjoy special food and drinks from renowned chefs at dozens of local eateries during the latest installment of Charleston Restaurant Week. Tata talk: Noon, Jan. 10, High Cotton restaurant, East Bay St., Charleston. Retired Brigadier Gen. A.J. Tata will profile his latest military thriller, Direct Fire, at this Blue Bicycle Books Charleston Author Series Luncheon. CALENDAR, Jan. 1+: Berman’s civil rights photos on display at library

Staff reports | If you want to know more of what life was like on Johns Island as the civil rights movement was blossoming, you should see Ida Berman’s collection of photographs now on display at the Charleston County Public Library, 68 Calhoun St., Charleston.

A celebrated photographer and immigrant, Berman snapped these never-before-seen photos of places and scenes on the sea island from January 1959 include people working at The Progressive Club as well as portraits of civil rights leaders Esau Jenkins, Myles Horton, Septima Clark and others.

Special Jan. 4 event: Candie Carawan, who published the landmark, “Ain’t You Got a Right to the Tree of Life?” with husband Guy Carawan, will share civil rights stories with Team Backpack journalists 5:30 p.m. Jan. 4 in the library’s auditorium. The book includes statements from Johns Island residents during the modern civil rights movement.

A Charleston Celtic Christmas: 7 p.m., Dec. 11, Circular Congregational Church, Meeting Street, Charleston. Na Fidléirí and the Taylor Festival Choir will perform a program that continues to present a mixture of traditional holiday carols, instrumental jigs with a Celtic flavor and spiritual choral and instrumental segments.

Staff reports | Magnolia Plantation and Gardens’ annual holiday children’s village is part of a month of yuletide events at the attraction. The village will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily with several special events from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., including:

Dec. 2: “Santa Paws” featuring pet adoptions with Lowcountry Lab Rescue, Sinbad Sadie Second Chance Rescue, Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary, Pet Helpers, Greyhound Pets of America – Charleston, holiday crafts and a pet costume contest at 1 p.m.

Dec. 3: “Sleigh Bells” ring with pony rides, photos with Santa in his sleigh, holiday crafts and activities.

Staff reports | Circular Congregational Church on Meeting Street will host two holiday concerts in December that blend classical and folk music. A Candlelight Christmas Mass will be performed by the Taylor Festival Choir at 8:30 p.m. Dec. 10, while A Charleston Celtic Christmas will be offered the following day at 7 p.m. Also on the calendar:

CALENDAR, Nov. 13+: Johns Island holiday bazaar coming Dec. 2

Staff reports | The fourth annual Homegrown Holiday Bazaar on Dec. 2 will feature more than 100 vendors and farmers – and it’s just in time for you to do your holiday shopping from local vendors.

The event will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Johns Island County Park, 2662 Mullet Hall Road, on Johns Island. The bazaar will also serve as the farmers market for that day and is brought to you by the Johns Island Farmers Market and Sea Islands Chamber of Commerce.
