If new flood maps show your property to be higher than current maps, your flood insurance rates could go down.
S.C. Encyclopedia | Mark Catesby was born in or near the village of Castle Hedingham, Essex, England, on March 24, 1682, the son of John Catesby and Elizabeth Jekyll. Little is known of his early life, but he probably attended the grammar school in the nearby town of Sudbury.
Staff reports | The Gibbes Museum of Art will offer a special exhibition of works by 18th century artist and naturalist Mark Catesby titled Artist, Scientist, Explorer: Mark Catesby in the Carolinas. The show, which runs from May 12 to Sept. 27, will feature 44 watercolor paintings by the English artist, scientist and explorer from the British Royal Collection thanks to the generosity of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, according to a news release.
Staff reports | Audubon South Carolina and the Charleston Animal Society have launched the “Let ‘em Rest, Let ‘em Nest” campaign to educate state residents and visitors about the fragility and wonder of coastal birds. The campaign is designed to teach the importance of reducing human disturbance to coastal nesting spots.

Staff reports | North Charleston will host the Lowcountry’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebration from noon to 6 p.m. March 11 in its Olde Village near Park Circle.
The celebration’s Block Party, which will be on East Montague Avenue between Virginia and Jenkins avenues, will feature live music across three stages, street vending and fare from Olde North Charleston restaurants, additional local food vendors, a Kid’s Zone with jump castles, face painting and inflatable obstacle course, charity partner booths, a bungee trampoline, a fire truck, as well as the always favorite mechanical bull. Michael Kaynard, Charleston: I didn’t grow up using tools, power or otherwise, and took up woodworking as my retirement hobby. As I got braver, I bought bigger and more dangerous pieces of equipment. One day as I was scanning Craigslist for tools, I saw a Ridgid 4510 heavy duty portable table saw. I bought it. I knew nothing about it and after using it found out I had a lot to learn. They are dangerous and sometimes boards can kick back at you. There is an anti-kickback pawl that the previous owner had removed. Duh.. How would I know?

Current debate about the continent of origin of these immigrants suggests Asia, Africa, and Europe. Recent evidence, although scant, has suggested the possibility of humans in South Carolina as early as 18,000 years ago, but a time frame beginning by about 13,000 years ago is widely accepted by archaeologists.
