FOCUS: Charleston Forum to discuss racial issues June 16

Staff reports | The Charleston Forum will host a public discussion June 16 to address racial issues in the context of economics and education; policing and criminal justice; the future of the past; and the Charleston experience.

“I am looking forward to participating in the Charleston Forum this summer. We must embrace these opportunities to come together and listen to one another,” Charleston Mayor John J. Tecklenburg said in a statement. “It is only by gaining an understanding of our different perspectives, backgrounds and experiences that we can create a united vision for a brighter future.”

Tickets are $10 and available online. The event will be from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Charleston Music Hall, 37 John St.

Staff reports | Graduates of area colleges tossed their hats into the air over the weekend as they celebrated hard work hitting the books. Pictured above is Sarah Anne Dumont, one of 657 graduates of Charleston Southern University. That was the school’s largest graduation since its founding in 1964.

Staff reports | North Charleston will celebrate the arts and dance for the 35th year in a row with the coming week’s North Charleston Arts Fest, which will highlight more than he North Charleston Arts Fest features multiple days of events highlighting more than 100 national, regional and local artists and performers who will dance, sing, perform and more.

The Fantasticks! Ten performances from May 4 to May 21, Midtown Theatre, Duvall Center, 2816 Azalea Drive, North Charleston. Midtown Productions will end its season with this classic musical, the story of a boy, girl and their fathers who try to keep them apart. The musical, now in its 57th year, is set to close its Broadway doors later this summer after 21,552 performances. S.C. Encyclopedia | Asparagus was an important cash crop in South Carolina from the 1910s until the mid-1930s. Commercial asparagus production began in response to the “cotton problem.” With cotton prices low and the boll weevil creeping ever closer, farmers in the “Ridge” counties of Aiken, Edgefield, and Saluda began planting asparagus to supplement their dwindling cotton incomes.

GOOD NEWS: Wentworth collaborates in new national book of poetry

Staff reports | Charleston Currents contributing editor and South Carolina Poet Laureate Marjory Wentworth’s work is getting attention in a new national book that targets middle-school children to open their eyes to the joys of poetry. Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets is a collection of original poems by Newbery Medal–winning author and poet Kwame Alexander, along with poems by teacher-poet Chris Colderley and Wentworth.

Also in Good News: Library to take part in summer feeding program; Tall ship makes it to Charleston; and North Charleston Fire Department wins coveted Class 1 ISO rating.

Updated, 5/1 | More than 500 high school students participated over the weekend g in the nation’s biggest high school cooking and restaurant management competition, the National ProStart Invitational (NPSI). The event, held at the Charleston Area Convention Center in North Charleston, featured culinary teams from nearly 50 states and a couple from U.S. territories who had one hour to prepare gourmet three course meals with just two butane burners — and without electricity or running water. This is an interesting book that compares and contrasts urban women’s lives in Charleston and Boston between 1820 and 1850. This was at a time when New York was emerging as the dominant port and financial center on the East Coast, bypassing both cities and challenging their economic survival.
