Staff reports | The Charleston festival season opens for 17 days Friday as Spoleto Festival USA offers more than 160 ticketed events in 12 venues throughout Charleston while the city’s Piccolo Spoleto Festival for 2017 has more than 500 events through June 11.

(NEW) Art and Science Extravaganza: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., May 20, BoomTown!, 1505 King Street Extension, Charleston. Several organizations will host “Rising Above Our Flooding Streets,” an arts and science extravaganza featuring more than 65 artists, civic and community leaders. The Fantasticks! Performances through May 21, Midtown Theatre, Duvall Center, 2816 Azalea Drive, North Charleston. Midtown Productions will end its season with this classic musical, the story of a boy, girl and their fathers who try to keep them apart. The musical, now in its 57th year, is set to close its Broadway doors later this summer after 21,552 performances. S.C. Encyclopedia | Maria Martin was born in Charleston on July 6, 1796, the youngest daughter of John Jacob Martin and Rebecca Solars. While no records of her formal schooling have been discovered, it is known that she was well read in literature, French, and German and possessed an interest in music, art, and natural science. By 1827 she and her mother had moved into the home of her brother-in-law, the Lutheran minister and naturalist John Bachman, and her ailing sister Harriet. Martin helped to raise and educate her sister’s fourteen children and manage the household.

Staff reports | The Social Justice, Racial Equity Collaborative will launch its two-hour Living Your Truth series at 6:30 p.m. today at Emanuel AME Church on Calhoun Street in Charleston.
The event will be hosted by two longtime friends, Rev. Nelson B. Rivers III and former College of Charleston President Alex Sanders.
According to a press release, the series beings together diverse voices to inspire, challenge and foster understanding in Charleston, which the effort’s leaders believe is ready to reflect on the truth and perspectives necessary for racial healing and transformation.
Staff reports | Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg and fellow members of the Charleston Freedom School Advisory Committee will hold a press conference today announcing the successful fundraising campaign and latest plans for a Charleston Freedom School, a six-week literacy program this summer for 50 at-risk peninsula students.

(NEW) Pow wow. The Edisto Natchez-Kusso Tribe will have its 41st annual pow wow at 6 p.m. May 12 and 1 p.m. May 13 at the Four Holes Indian Organization, 1125 Ridge Rd. Ridgeville, S.C. The event will feature drum circles, the Edisto River Singers, native American dancers and craftsmen.
