FOCUS:  Emanuel AME Church to honor 2nd anniversary of tragedy

Staff reports  |  The second anniversary of the June 17, 2015, tragedy in which nine members of Emanuel AME Church were slain will be commemorated with a series of commemorative events this month.

Perhaps the most visible will be Friday’s dialogue on race called The Charleston Forum.  The event, which requires tickets, will feature a discussion on a wide range of issues impacting Charleston, the state and the nation.  A description from the website:“The Charleston Forum’s dialogue is a step forward together, with no pre-set agenda but with a common purpose. Our discussions will address economics and education, policing and criminal justice, the future of the past, and the Charleston experience….

Staff reports  |  The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) will host a community meeting 7 p.m. June 12 to show updated designs for the new St. Paul’s Branch library.  The meeting will be in the cafeteria of the E.B. Ellington Elementary School, 55444 Old Jacksonboro Road, Ravenel.

Staff reports | Ready for 30,000 rubber ducks to be dropped off a local bridge and float toward victory on the Wando River? The first seven to cross the finish line at the pier at Children’s Park on Daniel Island will win prizes ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.

Yep, it’s just about time for the annual Rotary Club Charity Duck Race, which will be held at noon Saturday, June 10.
Festivities start at the park at 10 a.m. with children’s games and activities, including jump castles and face painting. The drop will occur at noon; winners will be announced around 1 p.m. Food and beverages will be available.

GOOD NEWS: Airport experiences 6.2 percent passenger growth

Staff reports | Charleston International Airport had 7 percent more people heading to one of 18 non-stop destinations in the first four months of the year, compared to last year in what is a traditionally slower traveling season. In the same period, 5.6 percent more people flew into the airport.
