S.C. Encyclopedia | Located on St. Helena Island in Beaufort County, Penn Center, Inc., originated as the Penn Normal School. The school was established in 1862 on St. Helena by the northern missionaries Laura Towne and Ellen Murray. It was one of approximately thirty schools built on St. Helena as part of the Port Royal Experiment, an effort by northern missionaries to educate formerly enslaved Africans and prepare them for life after slavery.

Reviewed by Whitney Lebron: What had me grab this book off the shelf was: a) it had Lowcountry in the title, and b) the line on the back saying, “Private Investigator Liz Talbot is a modern Southern belle: she blesses hearts and takes names.”. I decided right then and there to read this book. I was not disappointed in the slightest.

Staff reports | A new study shows Charleston International Airport is one of the best-managed airports in the country.
With operating revenue of $30.4 million and operating expenses of $15 million, the Charleston airport ranks sixth in a new Airport Power Ranking of 89 major American airports. The ranking was developed by the American City Business Journals with research from its 43 newsrooms and analysis by faculty at the Wake Forest University School of Business.
“It’s recognition by outside people about how well this airport is run, how efficient it is and how we are growing,” said airport director Paul Campbell in an interview.
Staff reports | The Fourth of July can be a lot of fun for people, but scary for pets. With that in mind, the Charleston Animal Society reminds us that the holiday is the most dangerous day of the year for pets because fireworks often scare them, causing them to run away and get lost.

S.C. Encyclopedia | Born on August 5, 1749, in Prince George Winyah Parish, Thomas Lynch Jr. was the only son of Thomas Lynch, Sr. (ca. 1727–1776), and Elizabeth Allston. He attended the Indigo Society School in Georgetown and then traveled to England to pursue his education. There, he enrolled at Eton and then Caius College, Cambridge. Lynch also read law at the Middle Temple in London.
Staff reports | The 241st anniversary of South Carolina patriots’ victory over the British at the Battle of Sullivans Island on June 28, 1776, will be commemorated Wednesday as residents of the Palmetto State are urged to fly the state’s flags:
Residents are asked to gather at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Washington Park next to Charleston City Hall. Thirty minutes later, the group will march to White Point Gardens to witness an 11:30 a.m. speech by Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg commemorating the valor of patriots as they fended off a land and sea attack generations ago.
